Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a song I wrote, recorded at New Jazz In Jonesboro.
In 2013 we scheduled New Jazz In Jonesboro once a month at TheArts@311. We often played charts that had never seen a music stand before and although we were reading charts we leaned heavily into group improvisation and free jazz.
On July 6, 2013, we recorded the songs that would become the "Cookin' For Piper" album. Matt Jackson wrote "Cookin' For Piper". Joseph Curtis wrote "Working, P.M.". And I put "Monkey Walk" up, for the first time.
It's got a tricky rhythm with a bass vamp on the Rhodes starting and ending the song. Personnel on "Monkey Walk" were Hairy Larry - piano, harmonica, vocals, and percussion; Mike "Zif" Lovell - guitar; David Shade - guitar; Matt Jackson - bass; Joseph Curtis - trumpet; and Cody Ballard - tenor sax. James Carvell added percussion on tracks 3 through 6 including the title track that I will be playing on Something Blue this week.
The cover art for "Cookin' For Piper" was "Euterpe" drawn by Emily Dewbre-Young. I love the image, depicting a muse playing pipes, and Emily gave us permission to use her drawing on the album cover. Then she sold me the original artwork, very reasonably, and it's now hanging at Eclectic Geekery in Walnut Ridge. Visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com to see the album cover and hear the whole album.
Ok now, recorded at New Jazz In Jonesboro on July 6, 2013 here's NJHB playing my song, "Monkey Walk".

DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Common Time Quartet Playing All Of Me - 2023-05-21 08:22 PM

From The Archives Of Something Blue May 21 2023
https://sbblues.com/2023/05/21/dj-hairy-larry-presents-the-common-time-quartet-playing-all-of-me/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a jazz standard played In The Loft at The Edge.
The Common Time Quartet played some cooking jazz and blues. I was happy to book them on a double bill at The Edge Coffeehouse featuring The Common Time Quartet and Bebop Beatniks.
Unfortunately their sax player, Josh Carter, couldn't make the gig. Fortunately they got Tyler Remagen to sub. So they delivered a little bit different sound with Tyler on tenor instead of Josh's scorching alto sax.
Playing the gig were Alex Ditto, guitar; Spencer Rawlins, bass; Chris Issom, drums; and Tyler Remagen, tenor sax, all ASU students in the jazz program at the time and all of them from Northeast Arkansas.
All of these musicians helped me with my composition recitals and at one time or another played with Bebop Beatniks. Tyler Remagen played tenor sax in Bebop Beatniks for years and is featured on both of the albums.
So now, recorded In The Loft at The Edge on May 6, 2017, here's The Common Time Quartet playing the jazz standard, "All Of Me".

Chickasaw war parties posed a nightmare for Easterners aboard the steamboat, who would not pause at the bluff. The New Orleans chugged ahead of the canoes and Chickasaw braves were content enough, chasing it off.
In 1819 white settlers laid out a town on north end of the bluff, named Memphis for Egypt’s ancient city of the Nile delta. Memphis trade opened to Indian tribes of western Tennessee, whose couriers followed narrow pathways through wilderness.
Cotton, steamboats and stagecoaches keyed 1830s development of the Memphis area. Business and residential districts expanded, town population increased, and Shelby County gained farms, villages and roads. In 1840 cotton buyers shipped 35,000 bales from Memphis, primarily to New Orleans for international markets. In 1844 Memphis shipped 100,000 bales, sending steamboats stuffed to the rails, piled deck upon deck with product.
Stately homes multiplied along a “muddy tree-bordered lane” to be known as Beal Street, where land magnate Robertson Topp constructed his mansion and grounds. Topp was an attorney and legislator who cleared acres of wood and tangle, utilizing a mass of slaves, reportedly owning hundreds for his various properties.
...
C.G. Locke identified William M. Beal as namesake of Beale Street. Locke stated the entrepreneur had intended to reside in South Memphis but “failed to carry out his plans.”
“The city government and the maps of the city generally spell Beal Street with the final ‘e,’ making it Beale,” C.G. Locke reported in 1892. “The street was named in honor of Wm. M. Beal, who was a prominent merchant of New Orleans at the time South Memphis was laid off into streets. His name was Beal and not Beale.”
Beale Street origin: The famed Memphis thoroughfare was named for William M. Beal, New Orleans cotton dealer, according to historical news and more evidence, electronically recovered. "Beal Street" is denoted on the 1845 map, above, filed with incorporation papers for South Memphis. Courtesy of the Tennessee State Library & Archives

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Dragonflight - 2023-05-14 07:59 AM
DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Dragonflight
From The Archives Of Something Blue May 14, 2023
https://sbblues.com/2023/05/14/dj-hairy-larry-presents-bebop-beatniks-playing-dragonflight/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear one of my songs played in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.
Bebop Beatniks have been playing jazz in Jonesboro for a long time now. Earlier this year I put together a retrospective album. I searched all of our live performances for original songs and then I selected the best of these to put on the album, "Church". I will include a link to the whole album on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.
On November 1, 2016, we played a composition recital in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. I picked my song "Dragonflight" for this week's podcast. Playing on the song were Sid Davis and Chris Wilson - trumpet, Nicholas Graves - alto, Jonathan Vickers - tenor, Austin Lynn - trombone, Kyle Kempf - bass, Alex Washam - drums, and Larry Heyl - piano. All ASU students at the time and almost all of us from Northeast Arkansas.
We called ourselves the October Octet. So how did that end up on the Bebop Beatniks album?
It turns out that every musician playing, except two, played in Bebop Beatniks or were regular guests with Bebop Beatniks. The band rehearsed for the recital and the execution of the horn harmonies on this recording is excellent. Far and away the best recording I have of this song.
So, since I could include it on the album, I did.
And that's the story about how my song "Dragonflight", played by the October Octet ended up on the Bebop Beatniks album, "Church"
So now, from the new Bebop Beatniks album here's a song I wrote, "Dragonflight" recorded right here at ASU.
https://archive.org/details/bebop-beatniks-church
music
And that's "Dragonflight" from the new Bebop Beatniks album, "Church". Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00 to hear more Bebop Beatniks, Natalie Cressman, The Bad Plus, and the Per Husby Septett.

Joe Lee Swings On
Joe Lee, Scotty Moore, Bill Black, Sammy Creason, Danny Jones, Mike Overall, Alex Washam, Gretchen Hunt
So ... Joe Lee was band director at Trumann, Arkansas, when he was working with Scotty Moore and Bill Black at Fernwood. Joe also worked with a Jonesboro drummer, Sammy Creason. Sammy Creason played with the Bill Black Combo on the Beatles tour. Later Sammy played with Jerry Lee Lewis and Kris Kristofferson.
He died of an aneurism and I never got to meet him. I did meet his mother and his sister.
Joe also played with another Jonesboro drummer, Danny Jones, who I did get to meet and record. Danny Jones also has a storied career as a drummer, drum technician, and producer.
Mike Overall, another Jonesboro jazz drummer, stayed in Jonesboro and worked at the Jonesboro Sun, eventually becoming the editor. He wrote a music and culture column called Overall Comments for the Sun. I played with Mike Overall some and recorded him a lot. We got along pretty good but were never close like Joe and I were.
I worked with Joe on three albums and he gave me coproduction credits on "Joe Lee Swings On" and "Boppin' At The Forest". Vivian and I did the cover art for both of those albums.
There continues to be an enormous amount of drum talent in Jonesboro partly because of the strong jazz program at ASU. Alex Washam, the drummer in Bebop Beatniks, took his masters in percussion performance at ASU.
And my daughter, Gretchen Hunt, who used to drum with Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians, is now editor of the Jonesboro Sun.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents John Shepherd Playing One Eyed Jack - 2023-05-07 11:38 AM
Guitar Soul-prerelease-CD
From The Archives Of Something Blue May 7, 2023
https://sbblues.com/2023/05/07/dj-hairy-larry-presents-john-shepherd-playing-one-eyed-jack/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a brand new blues rock song recorded in Wynne, Arkansas.
Mr. John B. Shepherd is famous for his live blues guitar shows. I like to say, "I ain't saying John Shepherd is better than anyone else, but there sure ain't nobody else that plays better than him."
John also has a studio in his basement in Wynne, Arkansas. John calls it StudioJS. We recorded some of the tracks there for our Delta Legends album, "Two Woman Blues".
Well, this winter John got to work down in his studio and recorded a new album, "Guitar Soul", that we are planning to release on HairyLarryLand. And from that album we'll be hearing a pre-release version of "One Eyed Jack". Our friend, Michael Riley, played drums on the album but on this song John used Zoom drums built into his multitrack recorder.
John is from Wynne, Arkansas. He was a regular performer at Blues Fest with his band from Wynne and he also played at The King Biscuit Blues Festival in our band, Delta Legends.
I can't link to the new album yet because it's still pre-release but I will post a link to "Two Woman Blues", featuring John Shepherd, Jeremy Burnett, and Hairy Larry, on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.
Ok now, here's John Shepherd playing his new song "One Eyed Jack" from his soon to be released album, "Guitar Soul".

And that's John Shepherd singing his new song, "One Eyed Jack", recorded in 2023 at StudioJS in Wynne, Arkansas. Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, to hear more blues rock from Brotherhood Of Freaks and Yarn.
