The Archive Of The White Master - basic D&D - Session 7
Session notes for December 1, 2020
We go back to town to see Burt the blacksmith. He's a big strong man with a large moustache and a bald head.
pic
Leaf talks to Burt about his armor. He says he will reinforce his armor and design a leaf on it for 20 GP.
I talk to Burt about dismantling the statues. He and his sons, Bart and Barry, are willing to help. They ain't got no truck with evil. We will leave in the morning.
We go to see Longo Shotins the halfling fletcher and bowyer. Leaf purchases a bow and arrows for 45 GP.
The next morning we set off for The Archive taking the long road around the forest. The blacksmiths are in a horse drawn cart with their tools.

Thanks Marty, I just love being here on Arkansas Roots with some great jazz From The Archives of Something Blue.
I met Tim Moore and Clinton Curtis when they were still in High School, jamming at Jazz Alliance shows at The Edge Coffeehouse. When they came to ASU they helped me with some of my recitals and I started recording Tim’s band, Caprice. Tim left ASU for North Texas State, another top jazz school, but he was back in 2014 on summer break. Jazz musicians love to play and when he called me about performing I got him to bring a band to Jazz Thursday on June 15, 2014. Some of the musicians playing with him that night were ASU students, Alex Ditto, guitar; Cody Ballard and Clinton Curtis, sax; Kevin Tinker, trumpet; Addison Boling, drums; and Matt Bounds, bass. Tim Moore was on piano and here they are now playing Funky Palisades.

On October 23, 2010, Bebopalooza, sponsored by KASU and the Music Department was held at The Edge Coffeehouse right here in Jonesboro. The Ad Hoc Combo played a blues I cowrote with Richard Murray called "Not There Yet". Featuring Ron Horton, trumpet; David Hall, sax; Craig Collison, vibes; Corey Emerson, bass; Mike Overall, drums; and Hairy Larry, guitar we delivered on a slow blues. Here we are now playing "Not There Yet".

Writing Quests
by Larry Heyl
A story is said to have a beginning, a middle, and an end. This is a simple and reliable guide for writers. Somewhere along the way, in the creative process, a light is switched on and the writer sees where the story is going. Once the end is discovered the middle falls into place. That is, the middle part is shaped by the end part providing the necessary bits that allow the story to end convincingly.
Sometimes a quest is well run and well played and produces a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. But more often not. In fact producing such a story is not the purpose of the game. It is a possible side product but not the goal. I think the players immersion into the fantasy setting and their identification with their characters are far more important to enjoying the game than any derived story everyone becomes aware of after the fact.

In the summer of 2018 Bebop Beatniks recorded the album “Leaves” at my HairyLarryLand studio. It was fun to work on some originals without the stage pressure of a live show. You will hear Sid Davis – trumpet, Tyler Remagen – sax, Emily Lindley – vibes, Alex Washam – drums, Paul Nunis – bass, and I’m on piano. At the time of the recording we were on summer break from classes at ASU, we were all students except for Paul who is on the faculty. Everyone solos except me. I wrote the song. Here’s Bebop Beatniks now, playing “In The Zone”.
The Wizard and the Djinn
by Larry Heyl - CC BY
Setup
The party wakes up in the morning next to a clear running creek. There is a slight chill in the air so they stir up the fire and make hot tea. They eat fruit and biscuits with their tea as they trade stories around the fire.
(DM hint: time permitting go around the table with the stories allowing the PCs to fill in their backstory and add items to their character sheet.)
They hear a noise in the woods and they all look to see what it is. When they look back there is a striking figure wearing a pointed hat and holding a staff standing next to the fire. The wizard addresses the party saying “I’m Randolph the Red and I need your help with a quest. There is a famous Djinn, Coriandor, who has disappeared. He had a spell book I need called The Pink Omnibus. He also had gold and jewels. I don’t need the treasure, you can keep that. But I need the spell book and if we find his lamp I want that too. Grab your packs and fill your water bags. You’ll need water where we’re going.”

Session notes for November 18, 2020
When we enter the temple Marusan is gone, The skylight has been replaced. Everything looks like it did the first time we saw it.
Leaf shoots the skylight with the rod of Pann-Severi. It emits a bright white light and everyone is blinded.
After a while we recover our sight. Leaf wants to try again. The rest of us leave the room. This time the rod shoots a fireball and explodes the skylight.
We check the statue of Moloch. The rope is gone. Marusan is not in it. The tubes are still cut.
The tombs in the side rooms are open and empty. No undead or weapons lie within.
We check Marusan's study. EVerything is like it was when we left it. The chests are open and empty.
We check the supply room. It's been cleared out. No supplies left in it.
In the secret room behind the temple Caper looks for a trap door and finds a loose flagstone. We lift the stone and find a tunnel with steep stairs leading down.

Tonight at 9:00 PM Central join the Inspired Unreality open game chat held in the gamerplus chatrooms at Tenkar's Tavern on Discord. Our opening topic tonight will be maps. Professionally drawn, randomly generated, or just the DM drawing with pencil and paper during gameplay, maps are a part of almost every quest. Maps of the area, maps of the town, maps of the room where the treasure is hidden, multilevel maps of the dungeon or the tower. How does a DM use maps to communicate the ongoing quest to the players? How do the players use maps to plan strategy? How do you use maps in your quests?
As part of my Film Preservation project, I am cataloginging all the public domain movies I watched this year. This blog post is taken from a thread over on the fediverse, and expanded a bit with links and the like. What follows is a list of more than 50 movies that are in the american public domain, along with links to those movies on various platforms, a short review/synopsis, and comments on the quality of the available prints.
Thanks Marty, I have so much fun doing From The Archives for Arkansas Roots.
Billy Jones is a bluesman. A genuine Arkansas bluesman. But he also plays country, funk, gospel, and soul. When I went to record him at KASU Bluesday Tuesday in Newport, Arkansas, on October 8, 2013, I never thought he would be playing the Temptations. Yet here’s the proof, Billy Jones Bluez playing the classic Motown hit, “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”.
