DJ Hairy Larry Presents John Shepherd Playing One Eyed Jack
From The Archives Of Something Blue May 7, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a brand new blues rock song recorded in Wynne, Arkansas.
Mr. John B. Shepherd is famous for his live blues guitar shows. I like to say, "I ain't saying John Shepherd is better than anyone else, but there sure ain't nobody else that plays better than him."
John also has a studio in his basement in Wynne, Arkansas. John calls it StudioJS. We recorded some of the tracks there for our Delta Legends album, "Two Woman Blues".
Well, this winter John got to work down in his studio and recorded a new album, "Guitar Soul", that we are planning to release on HairyLarryLand. And from that album we'll be hearing a pre-release version of "One Eyed Jack". Our friend, Michael Riley, played drums on the album but on this song John used Zoom drums built into his multitrack recorder.

Hairy Larry Presents Joe Lee And Friends Playing Misty
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-04-30
Thanks Marty, today we'll hear a piano feature on a jazz standard recorded for Alley Records.
When Joe Lee said he wanted to record another album playing the charts that he arranged to tour with, I was all in. I ended up as recording engineer and coproducer of the album "Boppin' At The Forest". It was a privilege to work with Joe Lee and all the fine musicians in his band, Joe Lee and Friends.
Joe decided to record the Erroll Garner standard, "Misty", featuring Joy Sanford on piano. As you will hear Joy stepped up and did a fantastic job on this Joe Lee arraangement.
Playing on the track were Joy Sanford, piano; Joe Lee, tenor sax; Craig Baker, trumpet; Dru Davison, Bari Sax; Tom Mason, bass; and Mike Overall, drums. They all played and taught in the Jonesboro area. It has been wonderful to work with all of these musicians, over the years, at Blues Fest, Jazz Thursday, and other KASU shows.
"Misty" was released on the Joe Lee and Friends album, "Boppin' At The Forest", recorded in the Spring of 2001. Here it is now, featuring Joy Sanford on piano.

BODY OF WORK is an intimate new album of songs from throughout my catalog, revisited and undressed.
It’s been twenty years since I wrote my first good song. Before that, I loved songs from afar, with all the ache and daydream teenage love requires. I was sixteen, sitting on the porch, up early having never gone to sleep. I felt like I had been let into the center of the universe.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Brian Henkelmann Playing Bop Soup
From The Archives Of Something Blue April 23, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a solo piano composition performed in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.
When I wrote "Bop Soup" I was taking piano lessons from Harriet O'Neal and Dr. Tacke was my composition instructor. So thanks to both for helping me prepare this piece.
On November 8, 2013, Brian Henkelmann performed the song at my Senior Recital. He did such a great job playing it that I made it the title track on my album, "Bop Soup", consisting of all ten songs played at my recital. The song holds up after repeated listenings over the years. Both my work, writing the piece, and Brian's performance, live and recorded, are excellent.

Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear the Queen of Memphis Blues sing a song her husband wrote about his ex.
Vivian and I have known Reba Russell and her husband Wayne since the nineties, back in the Blues-L days. I’ve heard her play at The King Biscuit Blues Festival, the Arkansas Roots Festival, and the KASU Blue Monday and Bluesday Tuesday shows. Before the pandemic my band, The Emporium Orkestra, would entertain blues fans at The Biscuit with our morning shows and Reba and Wayne would stop by to listen and eat breakfast.
The song we’re hearing today was recorded at KASU Bluesday Tuesday on November 13, 2012. I was singing with Delta Vox at Riceland Hall that night so Mike Doyle, who was then the station manager at KASU, made the recordings. And since I couldn’t run sound for Reba, Mike asked Sonny Burgess to do the sound work. As you will hear, they both did great.

Reba introduces the band including Doug McMinn on drums. Doug is the son of Papa Don McMinn, another Memphis Blues Legend. Don McMinn passed away in 2017.
And then there's a whole story about the song that Wayne wrote for his ex-wife. I'm gonna let Reba tell you about that, better than I possibly could.
So now, here's Reba Russell, singing the Wayne Russell song, "Almost A Memory" at KASU Bluesday Tuesday on November 13, 2012.

Thanks Marty, It's great to be here on Arkansas Roots with a song from KASU Bluesday Tuesday.
Reba Russell was definitely a favorite with the Bluesday Tuesday audience and one of my favorites as well. When she was booked for November 13, 2012, she was glad to come and play but she wanted someone on sound so I got recruited. I ran my recording deck and the mix board which isn't as hard as it sounds when the band is as good as the Reba Russell Band.
They played great and I got many good recordings. I'm playing some fantastic contemporary R&B on Something Blue this Saturday so I picked "At Last", the Etta James classic. A great song and a great performance from Reba Russell, here she is now singing "At Last".

Thanks Marty. Today we’re hearing an original jazz composition recorded for Something Blue in Riceland Hall.
When I first came to ASU I played in Tom O’Connor’s Big Band and I took some courses from him. We stayed in touch through mutual friends and when I returned to school after I retired he was the head of the Music Department.
I took composition lessons from Dr. O’Connor and most of my music theory classes. When he and Don Bowyer started the Jazz Writers Big Band I found the whole project intriguing. The idea was to have a Big Band that played all original arrangements.
Now I’m a composition major and I write jazz pieces. I have written a few big band charts and it’s a lot of work. Now just think about an entire concert with all original arrangements. Now that is a lot of work.
I recorded the Jazz Writers Big Band on July 6, 2017, in Riceland Hall, here at ASU. They were the Monday night concert for the Delta Jazz Workshop.
One of the songs they played was a Tom O’Connor composition, “Body Art”. I liked this song so much that I made it the first track on the Jazz Writers Big Band CD. I’ll include a link to the CD on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.
So now here’s the Jazz Writers Big Band performing the Tom O’Connor composition, “Body Art”, right here at ASU.

Thanks Marty. Today, I'm singing a Willie Nelson song accompanied only by acoustic guitar.
Everyone says "Crazy" is a Patsy Cline song but Willie wrote it. I love both of them and I love the song. "Crazy" was a country music hit written to a 32 bar jazz change with a lot of blues in it. So when it comes to American roots music, Crazy's got it all.
On May 18, 2008, we were hosting Sunday In The Park at the Craighead Forest Bandshell. There was a little bit of time for a short set so I was the surprise guest. Just me and my guitar, I stood up to entertain the audience playing "Crazy", other jazz and blues standards, and a few originals.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Lisa Ahia
From The Archives Of Something Blue March 26, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear Lisa Ahia sing a Leon Russell song.
After I went back to school I spent a lot of time playing jazz and listening to local jazz musicians. I decided to do an ASU Jazz Festival, Bebopalooza!, on campus and featuring some great jazz by ASU students, alumni, and faculty.
With my close ties to KASU I wanted the station involved too and they were glad to help, both with promotion and then with booking some of the bands.
On October 15, 2011, we had Bebopalooza! outside of the Student Union. Closing the festival it was Gary Gazaway and The Memphis Jazz All Stars featuring Lisa Ahia singing. They played a great set with everyone thrilled by Lisa Ahia's vocals.

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear Lisa Ahia sing a Leon Russell song.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB Playing Colossus
From The Archives Of Something Blue March 19, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a song I wrote that NJHB played at my Senior Recital.
The Senior Recital is a rite of passage for music students, the most important recital in their undergraduate studies. My recital was on November 8, 2013, and I had been playing all year with NJHB, the New Jazz House Band. It only made sense to me to bring this rehearsed act to the Fine Arts Recital Hall to close the recital with 4 of my original compositions.
My song, “Colossus”, was one of our favorites and we kicked off the NJHB set with it.
This recording of Colossus featured Arkansas musicians, Suzanne Michell – vocals, Addison Boling – drums, Matt Jackson – bass, Jay Shepherd – guitar, Don Bowyer – trombone, Joseph Curtis – trumpet, Cody Ballard – tenor sax, and Hairy Larry – piano and vocals.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jay Shepherd Playing Footprints
From the Archives Of Something Blue March 12, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're hearing a Wayne Shorter standard played by Jay Shepherd at the Delta Jazz Workshop.
I took Jazz Arranging with Jay Shepherd and we both had a good class. Jay continued on to take a Masters in guitar performance and then taught at ASU until he moved to the other side of the state. I would still see him every year at the Delta Jazz Workshop where we worked together again teaching jazz improvisation and playing in the workshop's small groups.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Mike Dollins
From The Archives Of Something Blue March 5, 2023
Thanks Marty. Today we're going to hear some jazzy blues recorded live at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.
Mike Dollins is a blues musician and promoter from Little Rock. We had the idea to have an Arkansas Blues Caravan bringing musicians from all over the state to perform at the Bandshell. The acts performing included Suzanne and Fred, Sandy and Roy McCann, Ben "Swamp Donkey" Brenner, Jawbone and Jolene, and Mike "Whiskerfish" Dollins and The Big Blue Cats.
It was great weather with everyone enjoying everybody else's blues. A good time was had by all, the musicians and the audience.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Sheltered
From The Archives Of Something Blue – February 26, 2023
Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear an original jazz song accompanying a spoken word poem by Walt Whitman.
The nice thing about the Delta Jazz Workshop is getting to play with musicians you haven’t seen for a year, as well as musicians you’ve just met.
On July 10, 2019, Bebop Beatniks were playing the Wednesday night concert featuring the working piano trio with Jeremy Jackson on bass, Alex Washam – drums, and Hairy Larry on piano.
Kevin Tinker was on trumpet and Emily Lindley on vibes. Both Kevin and Emily had played with us for years.
We also featured our frequent guest, Jay Shepherd on guitar. Rounding out the horns we had Michael McGowan on tenor sax. This was the first and only gig, so far, that Bebop Beatniks had McGowan as a guest beatnik.

I played with Matt Jackson in NJHB. He’s a fine bass player who’s in demand, playing with many musicians. He told me about a band he played in, the Steve Davis Trio, and after we adjusted our schedule a little we found a date when they could play.
Steve Davis plays guitar. Matt’s on bass and rounding out the trio is Michael Cates on drums. They work well together delivering a tight sound on jazz standards, pretty much playing all my favorite songs. At the top of that list is “Stella By Starlight”, a fantastic ballad.

Hairy Larry Presents Will Riley
From The Archives Of something blue February 12, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an original song that has blues, jazz, and gospel influences.
I met Will Riley at my juke house in Old Town Nettleton. He said he wanted to come and play so we scheduled him in. He became a regular performer playing mostly original songs. One night, on his last set, Bix Smith set in and I knew that I wanted to record what I was hearing.
So we scheduled some sessions during our off hours and recorded the songs featured on the Will Riley album, "My Baby's Got Me By The Blues". Eleven originals, each one better than the others. Fantastic work writing, playing, and recording.
I picked "Been Down To The Water" to play today because it's a gospel song played to a blues change featuring jazz guitar. A little bit of all the ingredients that make up Arkansas Roots.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Pansy Hall
From The Archives Of Something Blue February 5, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear some southern soul recorded at Soundworks, right here in Jonesboro.
I played with Aaron Love at Blues Fest 91 but we never performed together on a regular basis until I had my juke house at Old Town Nettleton. In 1997 I put together a band featuring Aaron and a female vocalist, Pansy Hall. We had a tight Memphis sound with harmony vocals. We sang Blues and R&B cover songs as well as a few originals.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry playing "Chunga"
From The Archives Of Something Blue January 29, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an original post bop jazz piece recorded at Harriet O'Neal's piano studio.
Regular listeners know that I'm a composition major at ASU. There's more to being a composition major than putting notes on a page. You are also expected to arrange readings of your pieces, make recordings, and perform recitals.
I wrote a piece called "Chunga", a prequel to Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge". Harriet O'Neal was my piano teacher and she agreed to help play a reading and make a recording of the piece. Harriet was raised in Wynne, Arkansas, and she taught at ASU.
I pulled some top area musicians to fill out the rhythm section. On bass I had David Eckert, librarian at the Jonesboro Public Library who gave lessons at ASU and on drums, John Long, band director at Walnut Ridge.
For the saxophone parts I had two excellent musicians who I had played with in the jazz program at ASU, Aaron Decker - alto, and Cody Ballard - tenor. The bari player I had scheduled was out of town so I played the bari parts on my synthesizer.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jay Shepherd Playing Freddie The Freeloader
From The Archives Of Something Blue January 22, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a Miles Davis blues performed at A-State Delta Jazz Workshop.
Jay Shepherd and Shugga Shane were regulars at Blues Fest so I already knew Jay when we were taking Jazz Improv together at ASU. He also played with Bebop Beatniks quite a bit and he is a featured soloist on our new live album, “Church”.
On July 12, 2016, I recorded Jay’s band at the Delta Jazz Workshop evening concert held in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. They played a great set of jazz standards ranging from swing to fusion and they closed with “Freddie Freeloader”, a song from the Mile’s Davis album, “Kind Of Blue”.
Playing on the song we will hear Jay Shepherd on guitar; Shane Chastain, piano; Terrell Montgomery, bass, and Keyven Dunn, drums, all fine outstanding Northeast Arkansas musicians.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Joe Lee And Friends Playing If I Had You
From The Archives Of Something Blue January 15, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a jazz standard played on a bari sax.
Joe Lee and I recorded "Boppin' At The Forest" in the studio, that is, in the front room of his home while I recorded in his office surrounded by Alley memorabilia. Except for one track.
"If I Had You" was recorded by Joe Lee and Friends at the Jonesboro Public Library. It was in the spring of 2001 and in between the sessions Joe booked a gig. At the gig Joe featured Dru Davison playing a bari feature. So the personnel on this song was just Dru and the rhythm section, Joy Sanford - Piano, Tom Mason - Bass, and Mike Overall - Drums. I don't know if you've ever done live recording but a lot my job as audio engineer was holding my mouth right when I heard something exceptional hoping for a good recording all the way to the end of the song.
After Joe and I listened to the recordings Joe decided to add this Dru Davison feature to his "Boppin' At The Forest" CD. Which is why, when you are recording a band, you always want to keep the tape rolling.

Joe Lee and I recorded “Boppin’ At The Forest” in the studio, that is, in the front room of his home while I recorded in his office surrounded by Alley memorabilia. Except for one track.

01. DJ Hairy Larry presents Jubilation Jazz playing “How Great Thou Art”
02. Something Blue – Bourbon Street – 29 second spot
Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear a big band play a favorite hymn.
You’ve heard of praise music and Christian rock. Jubilation Jazz plays Christian Big Band. They’ve got a big sound and a great message and people love their music wherever they go.
There is no doubt that they are evangelizing for Christ. But I think they are evangelizing for Big Band Music. Joseph Curtis, who plays in the band, took it a step further and said they are evangelizing for jazz. He said, “Most of the audience never goes to a jazz concert.” So, yay for jazz and yay for Jesus and thanks to Jubilation Jazz for bringing it all together.

1. DJ Hairy Larry presents Houston Steele and Bad Habit
2. Something Blue – Anyday – 29 second spot
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a Keith Sykes song played at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.
When Houston Steele started playing with Braden Byrd and Billy Spence we started getting them to perform at the bandshell. He’s a fantastic guitarist and vocalist with a wry sense of humor that he uses to connect to his audience. He’s been playing around Jonesboro and all over the country for decades doing mostly country and rock hits. He can also deliver on the blues as we’re about to hear today.

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a band from Wynne singing a Muddy Waters song.

It was a special performance because Kyle Harrison had played earlier in the day and he joined John for the last half of the set. This gave us two amazing blues guitarists from Wynne, Arkansas, on the stage playing together.

Thanks Marty, I have so much fun doing From The Archives for Arkansas Roots.
Billy Jones is a bluesman. A genuine Arkansas bluesman. But he also plays country, funk, gospel, and soul. When I went to record him at KASU Bluesday Tuesday in Newport, Arkansas, on October 8, 2013, I never thought he would be playing the Temptations. Yet here’s the proof, Billy Jones Bluez playing the classic Motown hit, “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”.

In 2019 KASU sponsored New Jazz In Jonesboro held in the Round Room of the Jonesboro Public Library. On February 9, 2019 we featured the Ken Carroll Quintet, Ken Carroll on EWI; Hairy Larry, piano; Gabe Waters, bass; Chris Isom, drums; and Joseph Curtis, trumpet. Ken Carroll is Director Of Jazz Studies at ASU. Joseph Curtis is the band director at Hoxie High School. The rest of us are jazz students at ASU. We love the Bossa Nova standard, “Recordame”, and that love for this music shines through in this performance. Now, here’s the Ken Carroll Quintet playing “Recordame”.

2. Something Blue – Changes – 29 second spot
Thanks Marty, I’ve got a great blues song this week performed live at the Fall Ball by Delta Legends.
On September 30, 2017 Delta Legends took a road trip down to the Mississippi Hill Country to play at the Fall Ball. We originally booked to busk on Saturday morning but they offered us a slot early Saturday afternoon so we got to play that too. “All Over Again” is a blues standard made famous by B.B. King and Paul Butterfield. It’s one of our best songs and inspired by the festival stage we nailed it.

Thanks Marty, I’m Hairy Larry and I’ve got the blues for you.
Kyle Tims got in touch with me about playing at Blues Fest and we were glad to have him perform in September of 1997. I was talking to some of my friends who had played at Blues Fest, Sonny Burgess, Doug Greeno, and Larry Donn, and they told me that Kyle’s father, Tommy Tims, was a rockabilly drummer back in the day. Music runs in the family in Northeast Arkansas so I expected Kyle to put on a good show but everyone was just knocked out by his fantastic blues guitar work following in the footsteps of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
