DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry Playing The Blue Crane - 2022-06-26 08:46 AM

From The Archives Of Something Blue June 26, 2022

DJ Hairy Larry presents Hairy Larry playing "The Blue Crane".

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry
02. Something Blue - School - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a brand new entry to the archives of Something Blue.

I've got a new album out called Hairy Larry Livestreams, 16 original songs performed live on my twitch stream.

A little bit over a year ago I started livestreaming on twitch. I called my channel Hairy Larry Practicing Piano. The first song I wrote for my stream was "Crates", track one on the new album.

I started off playing for two hours three times a week but since then I've got that a little bit more under control with shorter performances. Recently I've even skipped a few days because of the heat. My approximate schedule is Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 2:00 PM.

I have also been working with other musicians lately, once we even got Bebop Beatniks on the Twitch Porch. So instead of adding these performances to my schedule I let them replace a performance. Besides the setup time and the time spent playing the music there's also a lot of time that goes into video and audio post production and then uploading and promoting the songs.

The songs are mostly instrumental but I scat sing on two of them and then, "Freddy's Blues", has lyrics and I also sing some instrumental solos as played by Freddy and the trombonist.

All of the songs were recorded at the HairyLarryLand Twitch Studio except "Low Earth Orbit" which was streamed from Beatle's Park in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas.

I am including some links on the Something Blue website including a link to the album on archive.org and links to my Twitch stream and Youtube channel. When you visit my Youtube channel please subscribe, I'm trying to get over 1000 subscribers.

Ok now, here I am scat singing a song I wrote called "The Blue Crane".

And that's a song from my new album, Hairy Larry Livestreams, called "The Blue Crane". Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, for more contemporary jazz from Kevin Eubanks, Stanley Jordan, Carla Bley, and Dave Holland.

Last weeks show, "Stones", is streaming here.

Last week on Inspired Unreality. Actual play at Eclectic Geekery.

Acorn People and Mister MistMeister from hairylarry's blog

On their way back from Mr Muffin's Second Hand Store Ari, Caper, and Clairen met Edge Bravestone, a cautious fighter. Caper said "Well met" and invited him to his hobbit hole for elevenses. They had a floral mix that, when steeped, thickens the air with love and tea infusing aromas from across the Four Marches.

Caper mentioned that he had heard of an interesting tree across the river in Wilken Woods and when everyone said they were up for a hike anyway off they went.

They took a short cut along the riverbank and soon were crossing the bridge and entering Wilken Woods, a magic forest. Ari and Caper had been to the tree before so Caper led the way, a little over a mile on the road and then a slight veer to the north following a barely used woods trail.

Soon they came to a large oak tree with some owls perched in the upper branches and acorns covering the ground. Caper gathered a bunch of acorns in a pile and stirred them with his finger and up popped an acorn man who said, "We are acorns from the sentient oak. When met with intelligent interest we wake up and talk. The sentient oak can talk too but time runs slow for him. We acorns can understand him but other living creatures cannot."

Caper continued talking to the acorn man and Ari, Clairen, and Edge gathered acorns together. Soon they were all talking to acorn men.

After talking about the tree, the owls, and everything (including fairies) Caper's acorn man stepped to the fore. He said, "We need your help. There is nothing we would like more than to lay on the ground and wait to be an oak tree. But acorns lying in the shadow of a sentient oak cannot grow. The owls sometimes help by carrying acorns or acorn men to other parts of Wilken Woods but they never cross the river. We would like to expand our horizons and answer our constant conundrum, which came first, the magic forest or the sentient oak trees?"

Caper said, "I know just the spot.", turning to Ari, "Remember the hill above the mist where we rescued those people from the past?"

Ari agreed that the hill would be more than suitable. Caper said, "We have some unfinished business there too and maybe we can make the misty valley safe with the help of Clairen, Edge, and our new friends, the acorn people.

So each of them carried an acorn man on their shoulder and trekked back to Tobbins Shire and then up the road leading to the misty valley.

When they got to the top of the hill they could see the mist in the valley below and the two ancient houses on either side of the road. The acorn men loved the spot and they jumped onto the ground and ran in different directions looking for a nice place to lie down and wait to be an oak tree.

Caper filled everyone in on the danger of the mist while he started boiling water for tea.

"Ari and I drank this tea before and then we braved the mist and pulled about 20 humans out and guided them to the top of the hill. They wandered into the mist 400 years ago and when we brought them out it was still the same day to them. It wasn't until the next morning that they began to believe they were 400 years in the future."

Everyone wanted to solve the mystery of the mist and dispell the danger.

Ari pulled out a bag of tea and four cups. Caper made the tea and poured it. Ari stirred each cup with the silver wand King Groad had given her in feyland.

"So drink this down." said Caper, "It's not safe in the mist and we don't want to be waking up 400 years in the future, if someone comes to rescue us."

Ari said, "The tea protects against fey magic and when enhanced by the fey magic in the silver wand it is very powerful protection, indeed."

When the party entered the mist it was Edge Bravestone that started a conversation, calling out to the mist believing there was a persona involved.

The mist was soon showing multiple faces and waving hands. Although his conversation was disjoint and punctuated with oooos and ahhhs here's the essence of his story.

"I was a water elemental and one night I took to gaseous form to explore the dry land near the river. I got in a fight with a mage and his magic crossed my fey magic wrong and I got stuck in gaseous form. That's how I became Mister MistMeister."

"Time doesn't mean much to me so I don't know how long ago this happened. Later a party of humans wandered into the mist. They were lost and distressed. I liked them and I didn't want to hurt them so I froze time for them."

"Later on two of you came into the mist and took them off. I don't know why you weren't lost and distressed. I tried to freeze you in time anyway but it didn't work."

"And now here you are back again with two others. I like you and I'd like to keep you but my magic isn't working on you again."

Caper kept an eye on Mister MistMeister while Ari, Clairen, and Edge tried to come up with some ideas to fix things. Disperse the mist? Turn it back into water? What kind of spell could do something to a water elemental?

Ari said, "Ah, but you forget, I am Arimeth, and I am not new to this game." She picked up a D20 brandishing it in front of us and then she made it disappear. It reappeared on the floor and it was a 5.

Checking the Entirely True Tales From Beyond The High Hedge dice table we read.

The Dwarf-King’s royal artisan has a secret technique for brewing molten metal into heavenly spiced mead.

Clairen the friendly bouncy dwarf is still a dwarf and she could read between the lines. Maybe we need to get Mister MistMeister drunk. That seems to solve most problems for dwarves.

That got Caper's attention. He tipped his hat to one of Mister MistMeister's many faces and said, "I believe we're going to help you out in a bit."

Then he led the party out of the mist, to the top of the hill, past the resting acorns, and on towards Tobbins Shire to get a keg of ale.

Hairy Larry Livestreams Radio Notes - 2022-06-23 07:43 AM

Hairy Larry Livestreams Radio Notes

The obvious single on the album is track 2, "The Blue Crane", a blues with scat singing. Track 8, "Freddy's Blues" is a vocal number with lyrics where I scat the instrumentals played in Freddy's band.

Their are two latin numbers. Track 7, "Malaysia" is a beautiful bossa and track 14, "African Violet" is uptempo and a favorite.

Track 6, "Knockin Boots" is an extended blues with a nice turnaround.

There is a Livestream Suite of four songs, all written in 2021.

10 Ambiguously
11 Eventually
12 Causality
13 Noumenology

To excerpt from the suite I recommend "Causality" and "Noumenology". "Noumenology" also has scat singing.

I like them all but these notes might help select songs for the radio.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Idle Americans Playing Too Rolling Stoned - 2022-06-21 11:16 AM

DJ Hairy Larry presents Idle Americans playing "Too Rolling Stoned".

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Idle Americans
02. Something Blue - Stones - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty. Today we we're hearing some blues rock recorded at Blues Fest.

At Blues Fest we presented all kinds of music, blues, rock, acoustic, and country. We even had some harmony acts, gospel and pop. When John Shepherd brought his band it was real delta blues but occasionally they'd play some blues rock. The song we're hearing today is both, starts as blues rock and ends with some great blues.

It was September 16, 2007. The band was called Idle Americans, a blues act from Wynne, Arkansas, featuring John B. Shepherd on lead guitar and vocals. Also playing in Idle Americans were Robert Fronabarger - guitar, Jeremy Burnett - harmonica and vocals, Barry Eppes - bass, and Mike Riley - drums. They played at Blues Fest every year and they were a powerhouse. What we're hearing today will give you a taste of what this band is still delivering today.

One year at Blues Fest John said something that I still remember today. We were talking about the variety of music and styles and the way the bands played so different even when they were playing the same song. John said, "If we all played everything the same way there wouldn't be much point in coming to listen." I agree with John. Every performance should be an adventure, for the audience and for the band.

So now, recorded on September 16, 2007, here's Idle Americans doing the Robin Trower song, "Too Rolling Stoned".

And that's Idle Americans, from Wynne, Arkansas, playing "Too Rolling Stoned" at Blues Fest right here in Jonesboro. Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00 to hear Lunar Ticks and Miracle Orchestra.

Explore Tobbins Shire on Inspired Unreality open game chat hosted by Eclectic Geekery in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. We will be playing a hybrid game with some of us sitting around a table and others from anywhere in the world meeting in the gamerplus chat rooms at Tankar's Tavern on Discord.

For more information about Inspired Unreality and for a link to Tenkars Tavern go here.

https://gamerplus.org/index

Tobbins Shire is the home of Caper Tobbins, Ari's sidekick. Caper, Arimeth, and Tude, Ari's wildcat have been adventuring together for over thirty years. If you include The Ghost of Tobbins Shire this will be a three generation RPG game at Eclectic Geekery alone. Come and join us and we'll see how this works.

Last month our granddaughter Liz joined Vivian and myself at Eclectic Geekery to play Just Quest. She's playing a dwarf, Clairen, who is friendly and bouncy.

Clairen wanted to head to town and make new friends so off we went. On the way we met Pogbert Piper blowing spectacular smoke rings in his garden. His smoke looked like soot from a roaring black hearth.

Caper played a merry jig on his flute and every one was tapping their feet or hoeing in time to the music except Clairen who was bouncing up and down.

Then on to town and a visit to Mr. Muffin's second hand store. Clairen bought a yellow headband. Caper bought a black saddle for his pony.

And that ain't all ...

Eclectic Geekery is a book and hobby store with a focus on sci-fi, fantasy and all things geeky. Here's a link to their Facebook page.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Caprice Playing Misty - 2022-06-13 12:45 PM

From The Archives Of Something Blue June 12, 2022

DJ Hairy Larry presents Caprice playing "Misty".

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Caprice
02. Something Blue - Extra - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're hearing a jazz standard played at KASU Jazz Thursday.

Brandon Moore only spent one year in the ASU Jazz Program but it was a very eventful year. Brandon and his brother Tim rehearsed the band Caprice and I was able to record their recital in the band room. They played so good that I booked them for KASU Jazz Thursday on January 24, 2013. They played a great show and it wasn't much later that they talked to me about recording the Caprice album, "from dawn til dusk", which has become a favorite here at KASU.

After a year at ASU Brandon went on to continue his jazz studies at North Texas State and now he teaches, composes, and plays at Nashville, Tennessee. On Something Blue this week I will feature some of his current work.

At their Jazz Thursday show they played mostly standards including this great version of the Erroll Garner song "Misty", featuring Brandon Moore on saxophone.

I'll be Guerilla Livestreaming Scenic Northeast Arkansas from in front of this Black Oak, Arkansas, mural located in Black Oak, Arkansas, Saturday, June 11 at 2:00 PM.

Here's what I wrote in the Gamer+ News.

Vivian and I have started a new project, Guerilla Livestreaming Scenic Northeast Arkansas. Saturday afternoon we'll be streaming from Black Oak, Arkansas. If you're as old as me that name might ring a bell.

I'll be livestreaming from in front of the High On The Hog mural painted on brick. I've been a fan since their first album came out and I finally got to meet Jim Dandy at the KASU Arkansas Roots Festival. Now I get to play in Black Oak, Arkansas, in front of a mural memorializing the band.

Here's the website for our Guerilla Livestreaming Scenic Northeast Arkansas project. All of our new videos will be posted here.

Collaborate On Malaysia - 2021-10-17 - 2022-06-08 09:30 AM

Collaborate on "Malaysia" - 2021-10-17

I played this on my twitch livestream on October 17, 2021, with an arrangement designed for collaboration. Collaborators play over a piano trio with the bass and drums provided by an irealpro script with the chords for my original song, "Malaysia". The irealpro app can be viewed running on my tablet on the right side of the video screen.

Here are the links to the audio and video versions on the Live Music Archive.

https://archive.org/details/hl2021-10-17

https://archive.org/details/hl2021-10-17.video

"Malaysia" is the second song so click play and then click next (>|). The first song is a Salsa called "African Violet". I have updated the change since I recorded this. There is a video of Bebop Beatiks playing the updated version here.

https://youtu.be/sQ4nBZP1WUo

For collaboration use the flac file for audio and the mp4 file for video to get the best quality.

There are eight choruses in this arrangement. Here's the collaboration script.

1. head - play along with the piano in unison, harmony, or counterpoint
2. guest solo
3. guest solo
4. piano solo - lay out
5. paino solo - lay out
6. guest solo
7. guest solo
8. head - play along with the piano - do something different than the first head

You can download the irealpro livestream scripts here.

https://hairylarryland.com/irealpro/

You can download sheet music here.

https://hairylarryland.com/stream/

The sheet music for "Malaysia" includes head, harmony, counterpoint, and background parts.

If you decide to do a video mashup one option would be to leave my video fullscreen and record yourself on your phone in the vertical position placing this overlay over the chat box on the left side of the screen. You can cover the bass notes on the piano if that works best. In "Malaysia" I don't play in the lower octaves.

Guerilla Livestreaming And The Dancing Tree - 2022-06-07 09:39 PM

Guerilla Livestreaming And The Dancing Tree

(hairylarry) — Today at 4:26 PM
It was exciting today. I knew thunderstorms were coming but before 2:00 it looked great.
So I set up for Guerilla Livestreaming in the front yard.
I played one song and it started blowing cold and misting down.
So I packed it all up and then we sat on the porch for a while and by the time we got into the house the internet was down.
It still is. I'm typing this on my laptop using my phone hotspot
When I was putting the equipment up I accidentally restarted the livestream on my S10
So I had an accidental video up on twitch
That's why I had to hook up my laptop on my hotspot. So I could delete the accidental livestream from twitch.
I recorded on my phone. A thing I like about my phone is after I make the video I can set it up as an ftp server using the Access from function in the File Manager.
So I already hove both videos on my hard drive.
There is one cool part on the accidental livestream where the famous tree is dancing across the screen, spinning and twirling
I may excerpt that

Thomas — Today at 4:35 PM
Twas a great song though!
Cool to see you out in the wild 😁

(hairylarry) — Today at 4:36 PM
Thanks - I didn't really play it well because of the weather situation
Yeah, I've been loving it
How was the quality of the livestream as you watched it?

Thomas — Today at 4:38 PM
Looked great
Sounded good too
Larry in the jungle

(hairylarry) — Today at 4:39 PM
That's my front yard
I have plans to guerilla livestream from Craighead Forest Park, Lake City, Black Oak Arkansas, and the St. Francis river/swamp
That's all real close around here
I have plans to play at Beatles Park to but that will probably be with Bebop Beatniks
Thanks man - I'm gonna go rest now

Thomas — Today at 4:45 PM
Enjoy!

(hairylarry) — Today at 5:15 PM
So I took a rest and when I got up the internet was back!

Troubleshooting Voice Channels On Discord - 2022-06-07 09:49 AM

Troubleshooting Voice Channels On Discord

blackmage says

- make sure the headset/mic is plugged in properly (mic to the mic plugin, headset to the headset plugin)
- if it's a usb mic/headset check device manager window in windows settings to ensure its connected, also mic/sound settings in volume settings in the taskbar
- in discord, go to settings --> voice & video and at the top ensure that your mic/headset is the correct option selected
- test it using the "Mic Test" option just below where you selected your mic and speakers/headset for input and output
- if the mic/headset is showing up as moving the mic test bar then you're good to go in any voice channel in discord
- check the option for "Input Mode" in voice & video, just below the Mic Test, if it is voice activity then there is nothing to worry and her voice should pick up when talking; if it is push to talk make sure to check which key bind is being used for it and change if necessary to something easy to remember and use.
- if everything checks out with the mic and is shows to be working, join a voce channel and look in the bottom left corner of discord where you account name and status is, make sure the mute option is not on for your mic (microphone icon struck through), if it is click the mic icon and you're now unmuted and should be good to go.
- if the voice is laggy for whatever reason try turning the voice suppression off (above the mute/deafen icons, bottom left, soundwave icon should be struck through to show turned off) this can use extra bandwidth be a source of lag.
- if after this she is still not able to talk, check in the top portion of discord to see if there is a banner saying something along the lines of "Please turn on 2FA for moderation in this server", you can choose to either have a list of backup codes, or a 2FA setup on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, Last Password, Discord Mobile App) once you have it setup the banner should no longer be there and she should be good to go from there out.

Delta Boogie Newsletter - June 2022 - Guerilla Livestreaming Scenic Northeast Arkansas - 2022-06-07 09:32 AM

Delta Boogie Newsletter - June 2022 - Guerilla Livestreaming Scenic Northeast Arkansas

Guerilla Livestreaming Scenic Northeast Arkansas
---
I've got a new project where I livestream at parks or museums setting up in front of beautiful scenery. I use my Galaxy S10 to do the livestreaming and I play my Roland Go Piano. Everything is battery powered so If I've got good phone signal or wifi I'm ready to go. And If I don't have internet I can still press the red button and record. Either way I get to make Youtube videos of the songs.

So far I've been checking out my setup in the front and back yard areas of Scenic Northeast Arkansas. Here's a couple of links. When you're on Youtube please hit subscribe. I'm trying to get to over 1000 Youtube subscribers this year and I need your help.

Bottoms up in "Low Earth Orbit"
https://youtu.be/fKmBiaMwlkc

"Malaysia" Bossa Nova
https://youtu.be/dL7PDisBEeM

On the "Malaysia" video I talk about the project. I used a radio edit of the audio for my Arkansas Roots podcast, From The Archives Of Something Blue, that airs on KASU Wednesday and Saturday.

http://sbblues.com/2022/06/06/from-the-archives-of-something-blue-june-5-2022/

The videos above were livestreamed to twitch and downloaded to make the Youtube videos. I switched to Larix Broadcaster on my Android and it also records directly to my phone giving me best quality recordings for the excerpted songs. I tested this last Sunday and it worked great. I'll include some links to the better quality videos next month.

I also hope to Guerilla Livestream Scenic Northeast Arkansas with horns. Jazz Buskers in the great outdoors.

Bebop Beatniks on the Twitch Porch
---
My other music project this spring has been the return of Bebop Beatniks. I plan on livestreaming Bebop Beatiks next Tuesday, June 14, at 6:00 pm. My twitch link is.

Here's a playlist of Bebop Beatniks on the Twitch Porch videos we made on May 16, 2022.

https://archive.org/details/hl2022-05-16.video

I included alternate takes. I also made youtube videos from three of the songs.

My favorite house plant is "African Violet"

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry
02. Something Blue - Dizzy - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, this week we're going to talk about my Guerilla Livestreaming Scenic Northeast Arkansas project.

Sometimes I dig around in the archives and play a song recorded over ten years ago. Sometimes the archive was recorded just last week.

The pandemic has made it difficult to gig, so a little over a year ago I started livestreaming chill jazz piano on Twitch and excerpting the better performances to make Youtube videos. Recently I've been performing outside working with a couple of different livestreaming setups. Less is more and I am now able to livestream using just my Galaxy S10 playing my Roland Go Piano.

So Vivian and I like to go for a drive sometimes to get out of the house and enjoy the scenery. There's a lot of beautiful scenery in Northeast Arkansas so I got the idea of Guerilla Livestreaming with beautiful nature shots as my background.

Just last week, on June 2, 2022, I performed a Guerilla Livestream in my backyard in front of a large bed of orange flowers. The last song I played was a bossa I wrote called "Malaysia" and before I played the song I talked to my livestream audience about this new project.

So I'm going to turn it over to myself, Guerilla Livestreaming Scenic Northeast Arkansas.

Gamerplus News June 3 2022 - 2022-06-03 09:23 PM

Gamer+ News June 3, 2022

Saturday, June 4, is the first Saturday of the month so our Inspired Unreality topic is Fantasy and Science Fiction. This is a broad subject including books, movies, tv, and games. Whatever type you like we will be glad to talk about it.

Now Viv and I are old, so we came to Fantasy and Science Fiction reading books and magazines. Some of the authors we read were Isaac Aasimov, Robert Heinlein, Fritz Lieber, Arthur C. Clark, Clifford Simak, and Andre Norton. If none of these names are familiar to you perhaps you need to spend some time with us.

There's a whole new world of the future out there in the past and there's not much new under the sun that wasn't predicted by some author 50 years ago.

I still read a lot of these golden age authors and none of them age as well as Jack Vance. In my opinion. Maybe you have an opinion too. Bring it with you to Inspired Unreality, open game chat, where, this week, all Fantasy and Science Fiction is on topic.

Inspired Unreality is held every Saturday at 11:00 AM Central in the gamerplus chat rooms at Tenkar's Tavern on Discord. There's more info and a link here.

https://gamerplus.org/index

Sarah and Megan have got the ball rolling at Eclectic Geekery with multiple events every weekend. They say "Join us for Dungeons & Dragons Sundays at 1 p.m." Sounds like a plan to me.

https://gamerplus.org/newsfeed/4622

In two weeks we'll be adventuring in Tobbins Shire at Eclectic Geekery on Inspired Unreality. This will be a hybrid game with some players on Discord and some players sitting around a table. I'm always up for a challenge.

Everyone is welcome at Inspired Unreality. Come tomorrow, come to adventure in Tobbins Shire, come any Saturday at 11:00 AM Central. It's a blast.

And now, veering off topic, I've got a new project, Guerilla Livestreaming from scenic Northeast Arkansas. The idea is we take a short trip for a picnic and some chill jazz piano with plenty of nature in the background. Here's my Twitch link.

https://www.twitch.tv/hairylarryland

And my Youtube link.

Do me a favor and click on the Youtube link and subscribe. I have a goal of reaching 1000 subscribers this year and I need your help.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Mike McLeod
02. Something Blue - Wolves - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, this week we're featuring a song written by an Arkansas songwriter and recorded at HairyLarryLand.

Mike McLeod, from Imboden, Arkansas, was a regular performer at the Craighead Forest Bandshell. He was always popular with the audience singing in the style of Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffet. He would also get everyone to sing along on "Cover Of The Rolling Stone".

Sandwiched in between his popular covers he would play original songs and public domain material. So I approached him about recording an album at HairyLarryLand and he was definitely up for it.

We recorded the album in one session with Mike playing harmonica on a rack and acoustic guitar while he sang seven songs. There's something about playing songs for a live audience to develop performance chops that makes life easier in the studio. These songs were all recorded "live in the studio", exactly like a live performance with no edits or overdubs.

We called the album "Going Home" and there's a link to it on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

I am featuring some edgier songwriters on Something Blue this week so I picked a song with a strong lyric to play for you today.

Now, recorded at HairyLarryLand on October 24, 2009, here's Mike McLeod singing his original song, "A Hard One".

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some blues rock recorded at Blues Fest.

Shugga Shane, Jay Shepherd, and Charles Jones played many times at the Craighead Forest Bandshell, first as The Shugga Shane Band and then as Three Minute Genius. They were always crowd pleasers playing songs the audience knew and loved. On September 20, 2009, they also featured a guest vocalist, Maja.

These fine musicians not only play great they also know how to entertain an audience. And they’re so photogenic. You can find the link to the whole concert and photos of the show at the Something Blue website, sbblues.com.

On Something Blue this week we’ll feature some more songs from this show including one sung by Maja.

Give The Gift Of Used Books - 2022-05-20 05:46 PM

Give the gift of used books

Hi,

I've been under the weather and my mother-in-law has been faring worse. I return not with a music diary but with a gift giving diary. Although it is Christmas Eve this advice is not just for Christmas gifts. Gifts are wonderful things appropriate for other holidays, birthdays, and unbirthdays.

I have a large family and I was a math major as my family grew. It didn't take much calculation to figure out that even ten dollar gifts were unaffordable. Say we had seven of us around the tree opening presents. And say each person gave everyone only one present (which never happens at our house) We are talking seven people giving six presents each. 42 presents at $10 each is $420. Now that may not touch your Christmas budget but at the time I was a part-time student part-time employed with full-time financial responsibilities. $420 was not only impossible it never even made an appearance.

So we found Santa Claus everywhere. We went to flea markets and junk stores and best of all, library sales. This is when I learned to give the gift of used books.

Here are some of the advantages to giving used books.

1. Inexpensive. I buy used books for a quarter, fifty cents or a dollar all year long. When I buy a really nice book for a gift I sometimes go as high as three dollars. Yep, thats my upper limit. Really nice gifts for $3 or less. Affordable. And if I'm really broke or can't get out I already have shelves of books. I can shop at home.

2. No reciprocal obligation. I realize that most of my family will be giving me a present at Christmas. But sometimes when I'm out shopping a book screams a friend's name at me. I'll pick it up and wrap it for them knowing that I am not placing a reciprocal obligation on them. I even tell them how cheap I bought it when I give it to them. I am not concerned that they may feel an obligation to return a gift that they cannot afford.

3. Personal. If I know someone well enough to give them a gift I probably know their interests. I may even know their preference in reading. A well chosen used book says I know you and I love you. I think about you even when I'm shopping.

4. Regiftable. Whether read, glanced through, or unopened a used book is perfect for regifting. I mean that's what used books are for. Read them (or not) and pass them on.

5. Life changing. A correctly chosen book given at the right moment may change a person's life. Just try to think of some fifty dollar piece of plastic from Walmart that has that power. You can't.

6. Entertaining. Even if you don't give a gift that changes a life you might still give someone a few hours of entertainment. It's hard to beat that for a wonderful present.

I'm sure there are many more reasons to give used books. Please add them in the comments. Also post used books you have given or received that have changed a life or provided a few hours of entertainment.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

From The Archives Of Something Blue May 15 2022 - 2022-05-15 09:00 AM

From The Archives Of Something Blue May 15, 2022

http://sbblues.com/2022/05/15/from-the-archives-of-something-blue-may-15-2022/

Thanks Marty, today we're hearing a song I wrote, recorded right here in Northeast Arkansas.

On April 6, 2013, NJHB played their fourth performance at TheArts@311 in downtown Jonesboro. NJHB performances are more like an event then a rehearsed band with a different set of musicians at every show playing all original songs often with new charts put up on the music stands for their first performance.

At the show we had guest star, Chris "Stinger" Stevens, on guitar. Also playing were Mike "Zif" Lovell - guitar, Carl Abraham - drums, and Hairy Larry - piano, all from the Jonesboro area except for Chris who travelled in for the show.

On that night we had no bass and no horns but we soldiered on and played our show with half a band.

When listening to the recordings I loved the sound, especially the guitar work by Stevens and Lovell. So I mixed the songs to what is called a stub and then I wrote overdub scripts for bass and sax. Two of my friends agreed to come to my studio to play the overdubs and so I got Corey Emerson on bass and Cody Ballard on tenor sax.

So this song was recorded at TheArts@311 and at HairyLarryLand. Corey and Cody are such excellent musicians that they nailed everything first take. If you listen carefully sometimes it sounds like the guitars are answering the sax when, of course, the sax was recorded after the guitars.

So now, from the NJHB "Stinger" album here's a song I wrote called "Mosaic".

music

And that's NJHB playing "Mosaic" recorded at New Jazz In Jonesboro on April 6, 2013, with the bass and sax overdubbed later. Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, to hear Mark Turner and Sun Ra.

DJ Hairy Larry presents Hairy Larry playing “The Blue Crane”. | Something Blue

DJ Hairy Larry presents Hairy Larry playing “The Blue Crane”.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry
02. Something Blue – School – 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a brand new entry to the archives of Something Blue.

I’ve got a new album out called Hairy Larry Livestreams, 16 original songs performed live on my twitch stream.

A little bit over a year ago I started livestreaming on twitch. I called my channel Hairy Larry Practicing Piano. The first song I wrote for my stream was “Crates”, track one on the new album.

I started off playing for two hours three times a week but since then I’ve got that a little bit more under control with shorter performances. Recently I’ve even skipped a few days because of the heat. My approximate schedule is Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 2:00 PM.

I have also been working with other musicians lately, once we even got Bebop Beatniks on the Twitch Porch. So instead of adding these performances to my schedule I let them replace a performance. Besides the setup time and the time spent playing the music there’s also a lot of time that goes into video and audio post production and then uploading and promoting the songs.
