Gamer+ News December 2, 2022

https://gamerplus.org/blogs/post/995

The last Inspired Unreality of the year is on Saturday, December 3, at 11:00 AM Central. We will be discussing Fantasy and Science Fiction. We've got opinions and we hope you do too. I just finished "Harrow The Ninth" by Tamsyn Muir and now I'm in the middle of "This Is How You Lose the Time War" by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. We are making viewing arrangements for the new "Willow" series. We're all big "Willow" fans, here.

Inspired Unreality open game chat is held in the gamerplus chatrooms at Tenkar's Tavern on Discord. There's more info and a link here.

FollowMeAndDie posted a video and a blog.

"In my latest blog post I discuss the Saint Mark Turnip Festival invented by my players."

https://gamerplus.org/newsfeed/4962

"My Latest YouTube Video: Mastodon For New Users - Twitter Refugees is live on YouTube."

I post my Mastodon link at the bottom of every Gamer+ news.

My daughter Megan has been giving me advice on new Fantasy and Science Fiction novels. She says, "Readers are the best people because they see the world through many sets of eyes. They know both that their experiences are not unique and that no one sees the world in quite the same way as them."

Follow Me And Die posted about his twitch stream called How To Mastodon For Twitter Users - Keep in Touch with fellow TTRPG folks with the possible demise of Twitter.

https://gamerplus.org/newsfeed/4945

You may have noted my Mastodon link in the signoff of these emails. I've been communicating in the fediverse for years. Mastodon is open source software run all over the world by businesses and hobbyists. I think it's about to achieve critical mass whether Twitter survives or not.

The fediverse is decentralized so you kind of have to shift gears in your head. Other apps besides Mastodon can communicate with Mastodon users, for example you can share your Peertube videos to Mastodon accounts and the replies somehow end up on your Peertube account.

Very interesting.

I posted 15 brilliant color fantasy illustrations from "The Russian Story Book" drawn by Frank C. Pape. Published in 1916 the illustrations are public domain.

A priest, a pastor and a rabbit entered a clinic to donate blood. The nurse asked the rabbit: “what’s your blood type?”

Thanks Marty, this week I've got a special performance of a great song that is From The Archives of Something Blue.

In 2019 KASU sponsored New Jazz In Jonesboro held in the Round Room of the Jonesboro Public Library. On February 9, 2019 we featured the Ken Carroll Quintet, Ken Carroll on EWI; Hairy Larry, piano; Gabe Waters, bass; Chris Isom, drums; and Joseph Curtis, trumpet. Ken Carroll is Director Of Jazz Studies at ASU. Joseph Curtis is the band director at Hoxie High School. The rest of us are jazz students at ASU. We love the Bossa Nova standard, "Recordame", and that love for this music shines through in this performance. Now, here's the Ken Carroll Quintet playing "Recordame".

DJ Hairy Larry Presents John Shepherd And Happy Hour October 23 2022 - 2022-10-23 03:21 PM

1. DJ Hairy Larry presents John Shepherd and Happy Hour
2. Something Blue - Friends - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a band from Wynne singing a Muddy Waters song.

It was Blues Fest 2010 and John Shepherd and Happy Hour were closing the show. It was a special performance because Kyle Harrison had played earlier in the day and he joined John for the last half of the set. This gave us two amazing blues guitarists from Wynne, Arkansas, on the stage playing together.

And I want to emphasize playing together. Too often having more than one guitarist at a time turns into cutting heads, which is ok, but doesn't sound as good as hearing great blues guitarists working together.

I picked a Muddy Waters song, "I'm A Man" featuring Jeremy Burnett on harmonica and vocals. Also playing with Happy Hour were Barry Eppes, bass and Mike Riley, drums. All five musicians are from Wynne, Arkansas, a veritable hotbed of blues activity.

John and his band have been playing together for years and they are still performing today. If you are looking for a blues band for your party or event I can highly recommend them. They always put on a great show at Blues Fest. Definitely the real deal.

So now, recorded live at Blues Fest on September 26, 2010, here's John Shepherd and Happy Hour doing the Muddy Waters' song, "I'm A Man".

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear some Creative Commons Jazz played on the Twitch Porch.

Happy Birthday Creative Commons. Creative Commons licenses are 20! At creativecommons.org they say "Honoring 20 years of open sharing using CC licenses, join us in 2022 to celebrate Better Sharing — advancing universal access to knowledge and culture, and fostering creativity, innovation, and collaboration."

It seems like only yesterday but I have been using Creative Commons licenses for 20 years.

Wow!

I license all of my songs Creative Commons Attribution in an attempt to lower barriers for the legal use and reuse of my music. If someone wants to use one of my songs in their project all they have to do is include my name in the credits like this. "African Violet" by Larry Heyl.

On May 16, 2022, Bebop Beatniks livestreamed and recorded "African Violet" on the Twitch Porch. Playing at that session we will hear Michael Ward - sax, Joseph Curtis - trumpet, Alex Washam - drums, Jeremy Jackson - bass, and Hairy Larry - piano. Most of these musicians are from Northeast Arkansas and most of them have been active in the ASU Jazz Program. So thanks to ASU and Northeast Arkansas for producing such fine musicians for me to work with.

I wrote "African Violet" for my twitch livestream and it is also included in a piano trio setting on my Hairy Larry "Livestreams" album. It's an uptempo salsa and has become our Bebop Beatniks show opener. I love to play it.

I have added an audio player to my Creative Commons Jazz website. Visit jazz.mixremix.cc to hear my ever expanding collection of Creative Commons Jazz.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Houston Steele And Bad Habit - 2022-10-09 08:46 AM

From The Archives Of Something Blue October 9, 2022

https://archive.org/details/fta1_20221009

1. DJ Hairy Larry presents Houston Steele and Bad Habit
2. Something Blue - Anyday - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a Keith Sykes song played at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.

When Houston Steele started playing with Braden Byrd and Billy Spence we started getting them to perform at the bandshell. He's a fantastic guitarist and vocalist with a wry sense of humor that he uses to connect to his audience. He's been playing around Jonesboro and all over the country for decades doing mostly country and rock hits. He can also deliver on the blues as we're about to hear today.

Braden Byrd and Billy Spence, The Bad Habit Band, had been helping out at Blues Fest for years, so when they told me they were playing with Houston Steele I signed them up. They go all the way back. They used to play in Bobby Lee Trammell's touring band. Rick Lane and the Wolfpack Band was playing the same day, and he played with Bobby Lee Trammell too, so we grabbed Bad Habit and a couple of guys from the Wolfpack and the next thing you know Rick was singing "Arkansas Twist".

Well, ... that's for a future podcast.

Today we're going to hear Houston Steele and Bad Habit play the blues doing a Keith Sykes song called "Love To Ride".

01. DJ Hairy Larry presents Jubilation Jazz playing "How Great Thou Art"

02. Something Blue - Bourbon Street - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty. Today we're going to hear a big band play a favorite hymn.

You've heard of praise music and Christian rock. Jubilation Jazz plays Christian Big Band. They've got a big sound and a great message and people love their music wherever they go.

There is no doubt that they are evangelizing for Christ. But I think they are evangelizing for Big Band Music. Joseph Curtis, who plays in the band, took it a step further and said they are evangelizing for jazz. He said, "Most of the audience never goes to a jazz concert." So, yay for jazz and yay for Jesus and thanks to Jubilation Jazz for bringing it all together.

"How Great Thou Art" was my father's favorite hymn and I played it for him at my mother's funeral. At his funeral I played a song, "I Will Follow You" that he and I cowrote during the last week of his life. I'll include a link to the song at sbblues.com as a kind of bonus track for From The Archives Of Something Blue.

Inspired Unreality, now on a twice a month schedule, will be held at 11:00 AM Central, on Saturday, October 1. Since it's the first Saturday of the month our topic will be fantasy and science fiction.

It's a big topic and one we love to talk about. If you're into novels, short stories, movies, television series, or games, if it's fantasy and science fiction it's on topic. Let us know what you think about the new stuff or the old stuff. For more info and a link go here.

https://gamerplus.org/index

I write super shorts. The thing I like about super shorts is that you can finish a story in one sitting. Here's one of my favorites.

Hegel, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein
by Larry Heyl

It was my brother Jeff who was the doer. Always making things, working on this or that, good at math and physics in school.

I was the thinker. Always gazing off into the distance pondering the big questions. What is life? What is death? What is man? What is woman?

It’s that last one that really puzzled me. Jeff got married, started his own business, got rich. I got tongue tied around girls, took a philosophy degree, and had an income commensurate with my degree. I check the want ads daily. Never have I seen Philosopher Needed - Top Dollar.

So I never understood why the aliens abducted me. It was Jeff they wanted. They must have got their wires crossed.

Now I’m not gay but I didn’t mind the anal probe so much. Learning the alien language wasn’t too bad either. They put a silver disc on my forehead and I started talking to them. It was the interview that really got them.

They kept asking about stuff I didn’t know, technology, armaments, rocket ships, manufacturing. I wasn’t much help. But I gave them a good dose of Hegel, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein. I don’t think they were ready for that. They started babbling. They sent me up the ladder. I kept expounding and their confusion deepened. Evidently philosophy wasn’t their strong suit. Like I said they got the wrong guy.

They could only deal with me for so long. Before I knew it they had beamed me back home and departed Earth post haste. And that’s how I saved the world with philosophy.

I had a composition recital last Monday. It was great to perform with Bebop Beatniks again. I livestreamed the show and made a movie.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jazz Writers Big Band Playing Downpour - 2022-09-25 09:44 AM

DJ Hairy Larry presents Jazz Writers Big Band playing "Downpour"

01. DJ Hairy Larry presents Jazz Writers Big Band playing "Downpour"

02. Something Blue - Art - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an original jazz composition performed at the Delta Jazz Workshop.

The Jazz Writers Big Band either writes or arranges every song they play. That means someone in the band is working hard writing all those notes and articulations for every song. And then the band has to learn new arrangements all the time. It's hard to explain just how much work goes into a project like this.

I don't know if it's because they play them more, just the energy, or because I love hearing songs written by my friends, but I always loved all the original compositions they played. I thought the band was at it's best on these songs. I got in touch with the composers about doing an album and they were onboard.

Tom O'Conner was the jazz band director when I first attended ASU. I took many classes from Dr. O'Connor including composition lessons.

Don Bowyer was the Dean Of Fine Arts and I got to take composition lessons with him too. I was privileged to have him play trombone in my band, NJHB, during our 2013 season.

I met Joseph Curtis when I returned to ASU to complete my music education. He also played in NJHB and more recently in my band, Bebop Beatniks. When Ron Horton was Director of Jazz Studies I made a documentary film, "Jazztette", featuring Joseph and one of his original songs. He played at the KASU jazz festival, Bebopalooza. And he's the band director at Trumann High School.

All three of these composers write fantastic songs and arrangements. I will post a link to the Jazz Writers Big Band album on the Something Blue website, sbblues.com.

Ok now, here's the Jazz Writers Big Band recorded at the Delta Jazz Workshop on July 11, 2016, playing the Joseph Curtis song, "Downpour".

Searching For A Calendar Of Tales - 2022-09-22 11:16 PM

Searching for A Calendar Of Tales.

I got inspired by this tumblr post

pennyuniversity asked:

Hello! I am in the middle of my annual re-listen of the Calendar of Tales (the September and October chapters of which remain two of my favorite short stories) and I was wondering if the original website still exists anywhere or if the audio recordings are all that remain? The original website url currently links to a "money management" website which seems ironically unfortunate. I loved the artwork and collaborative nature of the site and just wanted to see if it had been preserved. Thanks!

Neil replied:

No. It's sad. So much glorious art was made and posted. Some of it might remain in the Internet Archive though.

So I took his advice and ...

This.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB Playing Catamaran - 2022-09-18 09:27 AM

DJ Hairy Larry presents NJHB playing "Catamaran"

01. DJ Hairy Larry presents NJHB playing "Catamaran"

02. Something Blue - Streak - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're hearing one of my jazz pieces recorded live at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.

NJHB is a different kind of jazz band without established personnel or repertoire. As usual when we played at the Craighead Forest Bandshell on June 2, 2013, it was the first and only time we played with this group of musicians.

So for this show we had Matt Jackson - bass, Mike "Zif" Lovell - guitar, Suzanne Michell - vocals, drums, and percussion, Carl Holden - guitar, Jay Shepherd - guitar, "Shugga" Shane Chastain - Roland Fantom, Addison Boling - drums, and Hairy Larry - Fender Rhodes, vocals, percussion, and dancing.

We are all from the Jonesboro Area except Suzanne is from Little Rock and Matt Jackson is from Kennett, Missouri.

We had an hour set so we got to play three songs. We tend to play long arrangements. The recording of "Catamaran" was close to 20 minutes long. On the album it's 12 minutes. So I made a radio edit that's 7 minutes long to play for you today. There's a link to the whole concert at sbblues.com.

In the process of doing the radio edit I did a lot of active listening. So I'm going to share some of the things I noticed about this recording.

Suzanne Michell is one of the best scat singers I have ever heard. There are places in the song where Suzanne and I are both scatting and Jay Shepherd joins the conversation on his guitar. Both Matt Jackson on bass and Addison Boling on drums play excellent solos.

There's no horns but we have three guitars and two keyboards. This can be a recipe for disaster but everyone listened while they played making space for the other musicians.

So now, recorded at the Craighead Forest Bandshell on June 2, 2013, here's NJHB playing my song, "Catamaran".

Gamer+ News September 16, 2022

https://gamerplus.org/blogs/989

As always, changes are afoot.

When we started doing Inspired Unreality open game chat every week we were younger. And yet, somehow, even though we're retired, we now have more responsibilities. So we're going to have to scale back.

Instead of weekly we are moving to twice a month. On the first Saturday we will discuss fantasy and science fiction. On the third Saturday we will continue questing in Milyagon or Tobbins Shire.

So, tomorrow is the third Saturday and we will be questing. Please join us to play or just stop on by to say hi and chat for a few minutes. We're always glad to hear from you.

Inspired Unreality is held in the gamerplus chat rooms at Tenkar's Tavern on Discord. There's more info and a link here.

https://gamerplus.org/index

Eclectic Geekery has changed their hours. And, starting in November they will have Holiday hours and be open every day except Monday.

https://eclecticgeekery.com/

You may have noticed that they are opening on Saturdays at noon now instead of 10:00 AM. So, Inspired Unreality will no longer be hosted at Eclectic Geekery for our quests.

We will, however, do other projects with them in the future. What exactly that will be, we shall see. Our daughters run the store and I am committed to resuming our visits after the current surge dies down.

FollowMeAndDie posted about the Gateway To Adventure Trilogy For Old-School Essentials Kickstarter.

https://gamerplus.org/newsfeed/4888

And Blues Fest is back. On October 9 at the Craighead Forest Bandshell my friend Doug Butler is continuing the Blues Fest tradition. We don't have a full schedule yet but I will be playing chill jazz piano as well as with my family band, Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians. I will post the full schedule and more details in the next Gamer+ News.

Which will be in two weeks. Because Gamer+ News is going on a twice a month schedule too. We will continue to remind you of Inspired Unreality on the Friday before we gather together to chat and play. So, see you there. Saturday September 17, at 11:00 AM. This is your reminder.

Please forward this email to your gaming friends and share this link.

The Busker - 2022-09-14 10:45 AM

The Busker

"The Busker" is both a musical composition and a piece of musical theatre for solo trombone. The piece must be memorized because the busker must seem to be imporvising the music on the spot.

The busker walks to center stage, carrying a trombone case and a folding chair, puts the trombone case front stage center and sets the chair up to one side. The busker then opens the case, takes out a plunger mute and sets it on the chair, pulls out the trombone and makes it ready to play, setting the case in front, open to receive tips.

The busker begins by playing bebop style free jazz. After a few minutes that comes to a cadence and the busker stomps a foot four times in beat, 1 2 3 4, while picking up the plunger mute from the chair. Then the busker shifts to the blues using the plunger mute, tongue flutters, and glisses. Without pausing the plunger mute drops into the case and the busker returns to the bebop style free jazz taking it to a final cadence.

The busker nods to the imaginary audience onstage thanking them for their tips saying things like "Every little bit helps" and "Yes indeed, thank you very much" also acknowledging applause from the audience and if anyone in the audience leaves a tip they get a great big, thanks for playing along, smile.

The busker then sits in the chair and starts playing arpeggios and scale fragments. This piece sounds like an exercise but it should seem like improvisation. It should also grow into a song without ever revealing a melody.

After finishing the busker stands and goes through the same routine accepting tips from an imaginary audience onstage and acknowledging the real audience in the hall.

Then still standing, the busker starts a rousing rendition of "Back Home In Indiana" marching band style which soon deconstructs through different keys and scales. After the deconstruction has obscured the original melody he starts inserting phrases from "Donna Lee". And then, in the style of Charles Ives, he starts inserting fragments from the marching band version of "Back Home In Indiana".

After concluding the busker smiles broadly at the audience and takes a bow. The busker leans over the trombone case, pocketing the tips, puts up the horn and mute, folds up the chair, and exits with a last nod and smile for the audience.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Steve Wages And Bad Habit Playing La Grange - 2022-09-11 08:59 PM

01. DJ Hairy Larry presents Steve Wages and Bad Habit playing "La Grange"

02. Something Blue - Baker - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a ZZ Tops song performed by some Northeast Arkansas musicians.

Wherever you live, if you're a hot guitarist, you've got plenty of competition. But if you live in Northeast Arkansas and you're a hot blues guitarist you're competing in a whole different class. Steve Wages was one of the finest blues guitarists I've ever heard. And he could play rock and country music too.

Steve Wages and Bad Habit featured Steve on guitar, Braden Byrd - bass, and Billy Spence - drums. A genuine power trio with Arkansas Roots. They always put on a great show whenever they performed at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.

Billy Spence played with everyone. Dennis Mathes, Houston Steele, he was even in Bobby Lee Trammell's touring band in the sixties. You could catch him backstage at Blues Fest jamming away on an acoustic guitar.

Steve Wages could make his guitar walk and talk. Just listen to his fantastic lead work. I think to get some of those tones he had to turn his guitar inside out.

So now, recorded at the Craighead Forest Bandshell on May 27, 2007, here's Steve Wages and Bad Habit playing "La Grange".

CC-BY And CDBaby Youtube Monetization - 2022-09-10 08:48 PM

CC-BY and CDBaby Youtube Monetization

I want to start by saying I am pro CDBaby. I use CDBaby. I am even pro Youtube Monetization for some artists and some songs.

But I do think there is a conflict between the CC-BY license, which is a choice on Youtube, and CDBaby Monetization.

Say someone used one of my CC-BY songs in their video and attributed me correctly. Maybe they even license their work CC-BY although they are not required to.

Say my CC-BY song is also on one of my albums which I distribute through CDBaby and I have enrolled in the Youtube Monetization program that CDBaby offers.
CDBaby will find my music in the 3rd party video mentioned above and they will, correctly, monetize that video because it contains copyrighted music that they are authorized to collect money for.

This would not be CDBaby's fault. It would be my fault for not understanding how CDBaby Youtube monetization works and enrolling in the program with my CC-BY songs.

If someone uses one of my CC-BY songs on their video they are required to include attribution. I have no other claim on their use of my CC-BY song and I certainly don't have the right to monetize their video.

Comments appreciated.

Thanks

Gamer+ News September 9, 2022

Well ... we missed last week. Our water heater broke and our daughter and son in law were here helping us put in a new one and by the time we were done we missed.

So. This week on Inspired Unreality our topic will be fantasy and science fiction kicked back one week. Please join us to discuss this niche that now dominates popular entertainment.

Inspired Unreality is held every Saturday morning at 11:00 Central in the gamerplus chat rooms at Tenkar's Tavern on Discord. For more info and a link go here.

While browsing tumblr I found some more great fantasy artwork. Here's a link to a link.

https://gamerplus.org/newsfeed/4885

Even though we missed last week we did discuss science fiction. My daughter read a column she had written about a generational shift away from personal contact where younger people prefer to order for themselves in an app rather than call in an order and talk to a person.

That reminded me of my super short.

AI Autocomplete
by Larry Heyl CC-BY

In the future everyone will have AI Autocomplete, first for writing, then for talking. The AI will be so good that it soon starts guessing right 100% of the time. People select the Just Say It For Me option since their AI Autocomplete always guesses right.

This is the future of humanity, packhorses for AI Autocompletes talking to each other.

Or is it already happening now?

Delta Boogie Newsletter - August 2022 - Blues Fest - 2022-09-05 12:09 PM

Delta Boogie Newsletter - August 2022 - Blues Fest!

Doug Butler works at Craighead Forest Park and he's a musician. When I went to Guerilla Livestream Craighead Forest Lake he talked to me about restarting Blues Fest. We've talked a couple of times since then and it looks like we're going to have Blues Fest in October. (fingers crossed)

It's still in the planning stages and we don't have a firm date or band list yet but Doug's band is going to play, I'll be opening, playing chill jazz piano, and, hopefully, a couple more acts will fill out an afternoon of music.

I am helping but this is Doug's project. I think it's great. I've been playing at the bandshell but I've missed Blues Fest. Vivian and I are just to old to put on that kind of show anymore but you know I will be helping out however I can.

More details to come in the next Delta Boogie Newsletter and on Delta Boogie.

https://deltaboogie.com

Even though I graduated last December with my second degree I'm back in school again taking composition lessons. I am rehearsing for a jazz recital where I will play five of my songs with Bebop Beatniks.

Here's a link to me livestreaming my recital repertoire.

https://youtu.be/kjVh_VR7vPo

I wrote two woodwind quintets last term and I am working on getting them read, rehearsed, and performed. Maybe by The Howling Winds, a student woodwind quintet with a bari sax instead of a bassoon. That will take a slight rewrite.

And the composition studio is writing for the trombone studio this term so I'm going to arrange "Bunnies" for a jazz band with a trombone front line.

All of this is really exciting to me.

Please let me know what you've been doing, musically or otherwise.

Thanks,

02. Something Blue - Ranger - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a country song performed by a rock and roll band at KASU Bluesday Tuesday.

We would get a lot of top acts at Bluesday Tuesday but the toppest of all was the international touring act, Sonny Burgess and The Legendary Pacers. They would play their Sun hits from the fifties as well as a lot of blues and rock and roll standards. And then, every so often, Sonny would sing a country song.

They wore matching red jackets when they played. Visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com to see Kern Kennedy and Jim Aldridge dressed for success.

Everyone in the band called Arkansas their home. Sonny lived in Newport and even when he wasn't playing he would come and enjoy the show. He knew all the musicians from around here and they loved getting their pictures taken with Sonny Burgess.

"Blue Suede Shoes" is a part of Rock and Roll history. One night, Sonny and I were sitting in the back of the room enjoying the music when I commented on his red suede shoes. He told me where he bought them and how much they cost. I don't remember the price but they were expensive.

I told him I was glad I was from the sixties instead of the fifties. All I had to do was put on jeans and a tie dye t-shirt and hit the stage barefoot.

Sonny's gone and Kern's gone and now Jim Aldridge is gone too. But we still have their music and that's forever.

Now, here's Sonny Burgess and The Legendary Pacers recorded at KASU Bluesday Tuesday, on December 11, 2012, singing the country standard, "Today I Started Loving You Again".

02. Something Blue - Valley - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're hearing a George Gershwin song played by a Latin Jazz Band.

This podcast is a little bit different because I'm not playing a song I recorded or worked on in any way. But Gary Gazaway is a good friend of mine who has played at many KASU events including Bebopalooza and Jazz Thursday and he also played at Joe Lee's funeral. So I"m stretching the definition of the Something Blue Archives a little bit to present this recording because it fits so well with my Something Blue show this week.

I found the song on Bandcamp. On the webpage it says, "Trumpeter Gary “El Búho” Gazaway has toured and recorded with some of the top names in the music industry, working with Steve Winwood, Joe Cocker, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jaco Pastorius..." I will include a link on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

Gary attended ASU and played in the ASU jazz program. He took his degree in Communications.

Gary and his wife, Lisa Ahia, and her father, Sam Ahia, are all fantastic musicians. I got to hear them all play together in Pocahontas at a KASU Jazz Christmas concert, so I'll have to dig out those recordings in a few months.

The song we're hearing today was recorded in Miami, Rio De Janiero, Montevideo, and Nashville. Gary plays flugelhorn. It's an excellent collaboration of different cultures. All of the credits are on Bandcamp.

So now, here's Gary "El Buho" Gazaway playing the George Gershwin standard, "Summertime".

Inspired Unreality! Open game chat. Saturday morning at 11:00 Central. Bring your own topic. All gaming is on topic.

Inspired Unrealiy is held in the gamerplus chat rooms at Tenkar's Tavern on Discord. Go here for more info and a link.

https://gamerplus.org/index

Next Saturday the topic will be fantasy and science fiction.

We had family game last Saturday with DM Carl, Courtney, Emily, Connor, Hairy Larry, and Vivian. I was having too much fun gaming with my grandkids to follow Vivian's lead into a much more creative ending. She was Clair the Cleric and she was converting the Spider Monsters. But we killed them first.

Not really my style. I find dice marathon combat boring but like I said I was right in there with the rest of the fighters. I do have to say the spiders had kidnapped the farmers son. They weren't really good spiders. But I need to pay closer attention to Vivian's lead. She comes up with the best stuff.

I'm back in school with three projects under way.

I am rehearsing for a jazz recital with five of my original songs. Bebop Beatniks at the Craighead Forest Bandshell. We will be livestreaming the band rehearsals and the performance plus videos and an album. At least that's the plan.

I wrote two woodwind quintet pieces last term and the Astate woodwind quintet, the Howling Winds, is going to play them. They have a bari sax instead of a bassoon so that will take a few adjustments.

We are working with the trombone studio this term as part of our composition lessons. I'm going to do an arrangement of "Bunnies" for a jazz band with a trombone front line.

Exciting!

Talking to Megan she told me many indie authors are doing audiobooks of their own work and posting them on Youtube. So I thought I could do that with my stories. I could even take some printouts along when we're Guerilla Livestreaming Scenic Northeast Arkansas and Guerilla Livestream some audiobooks.

Fun!

DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Over The Hill Gang Playing Basin Street Blues - 2022-08-22 04:07 PM

DJ Hairy Larry presents the Over The Hill Gang playing "Basin Street Blues"

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents the Over The Hill Gang at KASU Jazz Thursday

02. Something Blue - Lover Man - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear some classic jazz recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday.

The Over The Hill Gang performed around Jonesboro for many years. Their repertoire included Dixieland, Ragtime, Swing, Blues, and Gospel. I knew some of the musicians in the band and I thought they would be a good fit for Jazz Thursday.

So on July 28, 2011, they played for us at Bellaz restaurant right here in Jonesboro and they gave us a great show playing songs like "Sweet Georgia Brown", "All Of Me", "God Bless The Child", and "Georgia".

The featured musicians were Tom Mason - clarinet, John Barttelt - trumpet, Neale Bartee - trombone, Harriet O'Neal - piano, Day Arnoult - vocals, Craig Collison - drums, Bill Keisker - bass, and Mike Bridges - guitar. All very fine musicians who brought a spirit of jazz history to their show.

Harriet was my piano teacher. Three times. I took lessons from her for several years when I first came to ASU. Then I took private lessons from her when I returned to complete my music education. And then once again she was my ASU piano instructor when she returned to teach. After that I continued visiting her several times a year until the lockdown and she always asked me to play. She passed on when she was 85 years old. I still love her and I miss her.

Harriet's daughter, Day Arnault, sang with the Over The Hill Gang at this concert. I picked an instrumental number to play today which means I can return to this concert on a future podcast to feature Day singing.

So now, recorded on July 28, 2011, at KASU Jazz Thursday, here's the Over The Hill Gang playing "Basin Street Blues".

Ok, change of plans. We will not be playing at Eclectic Geekery Saturday morning. Instead Inspired Unreality open game chat will take place, as usual, at 11:00 AM Central in the gamerplus chat rooms at Tenkar's Tavern on Discord. For more info and a link go here.

https://gamerplus.org/index

So, Saturday morning in the best tradition of DMs everywhere, we're winging it. We may play. We may chat. We will be there. Come and join us if you can.

We are planning on resuming actual play at Eclectic Geekery and on the internet next month.

Sometimes you don't get to do things exactly the way you planned. But there is a silver lining. Our son, DM Carl, is coming to visit. We always have a good time visiting with his family and playing old school D&D. I even cleaned the back porch aka the family room aka the new twitch studio. So that will be great.

Later this weekend we'll have a big family gathering with DM Kier, DM Carl, and DM Hairy Larry all getting together with our families over at Gretchen's house. She's not a DM but both of her sons are. We've got a lot of DMs in our family.

I'd like to say that they're a chip off the old block except they were all DMing way before I took it up. I just love playing too much to want to be the DM. Actually it was creating the Milyagon locale and the Just Quest RPG system that led me to become a DM. And then that led me to Tobbins Shire and our current campaign.

Everyone's going to level up after solving the mystery of Mister Mistmeister. Not only did we save the shire from the mist we found a new home for the acorn people. I wrote this first Tobbins Shire quest up in a booklet including extremely cute acorn people artwork by Dubanci.

You can download the booklet pdf or view it flat at this link.

https://hairylarryland.com/milyagon/

On the music front, school starts next week and I am already rehearsing for a jazz recital. I wrote two woodwind quintet pieces last term and I hope to get them played too. Stay tuned for links to the recordings.

Here I am practicing my recital repertoire, five original jazz songs.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Giant Steps Playing Black Orpheus - 2022-08-14 08:40 AM

From The Archives Of Something Blue August 14, 2022

http://sbblues.com/2022/08/14/dj-hairy-larry-presents-giant-steps-playing-black-orpheus/

DJ Hairy Larry presents Giant Steps playing "Black Orpheus".

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Giant Steps at KASU Jazz Thursday

02. Something Blue - Amber - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're featuring a bossa recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday.

The core group of Giant Steps was Craig Baker, trumpet; Joy Sanford, piano; Tom Mason, bass; and Mike Overall, drums. For Jazz Thursday they added Michael McGowan on tenor sax to fill out their quintet. These are all seasoned jazz professionals who lived and worked in Northeast Arkansas. Michael McGowan traveled in from Texas but he is a former Jonesboro resident.

May 23, 2013, was the first I met Michael McGowan. Since then I have been privileged to work and play with him at the Delta Jazz Workshop where he helped me rehearse a student small group and joined Bebop Beatniks for our Wednesday night performance. He is an amazing saxophonist as you are about to hear.

I have worked with the other members of Giant Steps many times, most memorably recording Joe Lee's album, "Boppin At The Forest". I even got to sit in with them one night on bass. I went to hear them play and it turns out they were short a bassist. So I took a short trip to HairyLarryLand to pick up my bass equipment and had a real good time.

"Manhã de Carnaval" translates to "Carnival Morning" and it was written by Luiz Bonfá, a Brazilian composer. It is credited as being one of the first bossa nova jazz tunes that popularized bossa in America. Also known as "A Day in the Life of a Fool" it was the theme song for the movie, "Black Orpheus". Jazz musicians picked up on it and in jazz circles it is commonly referred to as "Black Orpheus". Prepandemic it was in the Bebop Beatniks repertoire and I also have recordings of Suzanne Michell playing the song on piano.

So now, recorded on May 23, 2013, at KASU Jazz Thursday here's Giant Steps playing "Black Orpheus".

music

And that's Giant Steps playing "Black Orpheus" at KASU Jazz Thursday on May 23, 2013. Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, to hear a Michael McGowan feature recorded at the same concert, Yellowjackets, and El Buho.

Gamer+ News August 12, 2022

Join us for open game chat on Inspired Unreality, Saturday morning at 11:00. This week it's bring your own topic, all gaming is on topic. Sometimes we write dice tables. Sometimes we just chat.

Next week we'll be adventuring in Tobbins Shire again at Eclectic Geekery in Walnut Ridge. This is a hybrid game played around the table and on the internet. Turns out the technical side of this may be easier than I thought. We shall see.

Inspired Unreality is held in the gamerplus chatrooms at Tenkar's Tavern on Discord. For more information and a link go here.

https://gamerplus.org/index

Last week we discussed fantasy and science fiction, mostly fantasy. This week I've been reading Science Fiction, "The Calculating Stars" by Mary Robinette Kowal, winner of the Hugo and Nebula best novel awards in 2019. It's an alternate history based on space exploration and it is also an experiment in writing old school science fiction assuming that the novel is contemporaneous with the story. It's been very interesting and like all great science fiction it deals with a lot of difficult social questions concerning America then and now.

I continue working on "The Story Of Mister MistMeister And His Many Transformations" proofreading for typos and doing minor rewrites for clarity. Here's the link to the pdf files.

https://hairylarryland.com/milyagon/

I timed it last night and it takes a half hour to read aloud. Great story with a lot of humor and you can clearly see the game behind the adventure.

Saturday NEA Gamers Guild is holding a library game day in Jonesboro and Sarah and Kier will be helping with that while Megan holds down the fort at Eclectic Geekery. I am looking forward to visiting with family both this Saturday and next when we'll take the drive to Walnut Ridge for more visiting and Just Quest.

Ttyl - 2022-08-10 08:08 AM

My wife, vivian, started the ttyl meme back in the BBS days. TTY and TTL are both modem speak. TTY means serial port or virtual port. TTL is Time To Live or hop limit. The meaning of ttyl is obvious.

This comes up because the author of ttyl, ttfn, l8r g8r, and yolo is being censored in libraries. Thanks to my daughter, Sarah, who was also a sysop back in the day, for her rant.

"I'm really angry tonight. The only way I could be more angry is if I were still in charge of the young adult collection at CCJPL. If I were forced to weed a book that was getting checked out because it's "outdated and would have been weeded if there weren't controversy" is really upsetting. I was part of the team that added ttyl to the collection when it first came out. We picked books based on reviews from respected library journals as well as what we thought our library patrons would like. I read the book because I knew there was controversy and I wanted to be able to speak from a knowledgeable place. Luckily while I was there the book wasn't challenged, it blows my mind that almost 20 years later it's being censored and pulled from the library shelves."

"For anyone that is interested. I've read the first two of the series ttyl and ttfn. I dont think I've actually read the one they were trying to censor (l8r g8r). I also just found out there's a 4th book yolo which I've definitely not read."

It is not the authors that suffer from this. There is probably a renewed interest in this series because of the censorship. The people being hurt are the young adults who could benefit from finding these books at the library.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Joneseboro Jazz Society Big Band With Dizzy Gillespie - 2022-08-08 08:26 AM

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Joneseboro Jazz Society Big Band with Dizzy Gillespie

02. Something Blue - Season - 29 second spot

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a bebop legend playing with the Jonesboro Jazz Society Big Band.

Before Joe Lee passed I used to go to his house in the afternoon to digitize songs he had dug out of his archive. He always had a story about the musicians and the shows so I got my own personal From The Archives done Joe Lee style.

One week he told me about the time the Jonesboro Jazz Society brought Dizzy Gillespie to town to play. Before the show Joe was talking to Dizzy in the green room and Joe said, "We're playing one of your songs tonight and we'd be glad to have you play a solo." He told me that Dizzy demurred saying that he had his thing with his band and he wanted to do that show. Joe told me it was a long shot but worth the try.

The Jazz Society Big Band was hot that night and they were playing great. They started Dizzy's composition strong and while Joe was playing his solo the crowd exploded. Joe thought wow and when he turned and saw Dizzy he laughed out loud. Dizzy played a great solo, of course, and then you can hear an inspired Mike Overall playing the drum setup into the shout chorus.

I mean how many times do you get to play with Dizzy Gillespie?

So, here we go with the Jonesboro Jazz Society Big Band featuring guest soloist Dizzy Gillespie playing "Manteca".

music

And that's the Jonesboro Jazz Society Big Band with guest soloist Dizzy Gillespie playing "Manteca". Don't miss Something Blue Saturday night at 10:00 to hear Dream Syndicate, Claypool Lennon Delirium, and Psychedelic Guitar Circus.

Gamerplus News August 5 2022 - 2022-08-05 09:21 PM

Gamer+ News August 5, 2022

Saturday morning at 11:00 Central we will be chatting about Fantasy and Science Fiction on Inspired Unreality. And have I got stuff to talk about. I just finished a TOR Anthology of short stories. Now, for me, novels are too short. I need at least a trilogy to get excited. But I really liked this collection, Some Of The Best Of tor.com 2021.

And then they hit me with a free Brandon Sanderson Wayne and Wax novel, "The Alloy Of Law". And coming out in November, "The Lost Metal" will conclude the Wayne and Wax series.

https://gamerplus.org/newsfeed/4862

Inspired Unreality is held every Saturday morning at 11:00 Central in the gamerplus chat rooms at Tenkar's Tavern on Discord. For more info and a link go here.

https://gamerplus.org/index

I also want to mention that "The Sandman" by Neil Gaiman is on Netflix.

Vivian and I started our Tobbins Shire campaign in February and it was so much fun it turned into a monthly feature on Inspired Unreality. In May we moved our table to Eclectic Geekery while still maintaining our presence in the gamerplus chat rooms. And last month we finished our first story arc.

So I took all of the session summaries and background info and turned it into a 16 page booklet, "The Story Of Mister Mistmeister And His Many Transformations". It's a hoot!

Just today I added Acorn People illustrations by Dubanci. Here's his website.

https://dubanci.cz/

And here's a link to the pdf files for the booklet and, if you can't print duplex or want to read online, to an 8 1/2 x 11 version.

Please share "The Story Of Mister Mistmeister And His Many Transformations" by forwarding this email to your gaming friends and sharing this link.

From The Archive March 7, 2021/December 4, 2022 – Suzanne Michell Trio – “Sheik Of Araby” | Something Blue
Posted on Sunday December 04, 2022

Thanks Marty, this week on Something Blue we’re featuring some fine blues women including Suzanne Michell.

Suzanne played at the first Blues Fest in 1991 and she was a regular performer in Jonesboro, both solo and in groups, playing at Blues Fest, Sunday In The Park, Bebopalooza, and other venues around Jonesboro. She has dedicated her life to music, teaching and performing, playing blues, jazz, and folk music.

On May 23, 2010, she brought the Suzanne Michell Trio to the Craighead Forest Bandshell and gave us a brilliant set. Playing with her were Fred Wilson and Will Taylor. The entire trio are Arkansas musicians from Little Rock.

Suzanne and Fred do this marvelous counterpoint on a great old song, “The Sheik Of Araby” including jazz scat vocals and both Suzanne and Fred singing horn parts.

Here they are now, The Suzanne Michell Trio, singing “The Sheik Of Araby”.

Thanks Marty, I’m Hairy Larry and I’ve got the blues for you.

Kyle Tims got in touch with me about playing at Blues Fest and we were glad to have him perform in September of 1997. I was talking to some of my friends who had played at Blues Fest, Sonny Burgess, Doug Greeno, and Larry Donn, and they told me that Kyle’s father, Tommy Tims, was a rockabilly drummer back in the day. Music runs in the family in Northeast Arkansas so I expected Kyle to put on a good show but everyone was just knocked out by his fantastic blues guitar work following in the footsteps of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
