Give The Gift Of Used Books - 2024-12-02 11:54 PM
Give The Gift Of Used Books
I have a large family and I was a math major as my family grew. It didn't take much calculation to figure out that even ten dollar gifts were unaffordable. Say we had seven of us around the tree opening presents. And say each person gave everyone only one present (which never happens at our house) We are talking seven people giving six presents each. 42 presents at $10 each is $420. Now that may not touch your Christmas budget but at the time I was a part-time student, part-time employed, with full-time financial responsibilities. $420 was not only impossible it never even made an appearance.
So we found Santa Claus everywhere. We went to flea markets and junk stores and best of all, library sales. This is when I learned to give the gift of used books.
Here are some of the advantages to giving used books.
Inexpensive. I buy used books for a quarter, fifty cents or a dollar all year long. When I buy a really nice book for a gift I sometimes go as high as three dollars. Yep, thats my upper limit. Really nice gifts for $3 or less. Affordable. And if I'm really broke or can't get out I already have shelves of books. I can shop at home.
No reciprocal obligation. I realize that most of my family will be giving me a present at Christmas. But sometimes when I'm out shopping a book screams a friend's name at me. I'll pick it up and wrap it for them knowing that I am not placing a reciprocal obligation on them. I even tell them how cheap I bought it when I give it to them. I am not concerned that they may feel an obligation to return a gift that they cannot afford.
Personal. If I know someone well enough to give them a gift I probably know their interests. I may even know their preference in reading. A well chosen used book says I know you and I love you. I think about you even when I'm shopping.
Regiftable. Whether read, glanced through, or unopened a used book is perfect for regifting. I mean that's what used books are for. Read them (or not) and pass them on.
Life changing. A correctly chosen book given at the right moment may change a person's life. Just try to think of some fifty dollar piece of plastic from Walmart that has that power. You can't.
Entertaining. Even if you don't give a gift that changes a life you might still give someone a few hours of entertainment. It's hard to beat that for a wonderful present.
I'm sure there are many more reasons to give used books. Please add them in the comments. Also post used books you have given or received that have changed a life or provided a few hours of entertainment.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Big Creek Band Playing Sing Me Back Home - 2024-12-02 09:23 AM
DJ Hairy Larry Presents Big Creek Band Playing Sing Me Back Home
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2021-12-01
https://sbblues.com/2024/12/01/dj-hairy-larry-presents-big-creek-band-playing-sing-me-back-home/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear Big Creek Band play some real country music at Blues Fest.
I always say we play all kinds of music at Blues Fest because when you get right down to it, it's all blues.
Dennis Mathes was the bandleader of Big Creek Band with Sonny Ackerman on guitar and George Hinds on bass. They all played at Blues Fest every year and Dennis and Sonny were out at the park every week helping me build the bandshell.
Also playing on September 16, 2001, were David Pearce, vocals and guitar; Dave Pearson, vocals and guitar; and Mark Hill, drums.
The song we're playing today features Dave Pearson singing a Merle Haggard song. And it don't get more country than that.
Now for the interesting part of the story. I was rummaging around in the archives also known as a box of old CDs when I found a DVD labeled Big Creek Band. I looked at that and I thought, this is gold.
The video looks like it was shot on a VHS camcorder and it's kind of rough with some skips and stops here and there. Fortunately the music was with us and one of the best songs recorded start to finish with no audio issues.
I copied the DVD to my hard drive digitizing it with Handbrake. And I uploaded it to the Something Blue Archives, one of my collections on the Internet Archive.
I used VLC to convert the video to an audio file and then I got the song I wanted from that. There is also a Dennis Mathes original on the video and I'm hoping to find an audio version of that song without the skips and stops. I recorded every show at every Blues Fest so I should have it around here somewhere.
Ok, that was all very exciting but not quite as exciting as this moment, right now, when I get to share this music with you.
Recorded at Blues Fest, on September 16, 2001, Here's Big Creek Band with Dave Pearson singing the Merle Haggard song "Sing Me Back Home".

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Moores Code Playing Every Day - 2024-11-24 09:23 AM
DJ Hairy Larry Presents Moore's Code Playing Every Day
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-11-24
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a jazz song written by a former ASU
student.
Tim Moore would sit in with Jazz Alliance when he was in High School, driving in from Southern Missouri. Then he spent two years in the ASU Jazz Program while Ron Horton was the director of the Jazz Department. It was during that time that Tim and his brother Brandon wrote the songs for the Caprice album, "from dawn til dusk". We released that album on HairyLarryLand in 2013 and we still love it at KASU.
Of course, Tim didn't quit writing jazz songs after he left ASU. He went on to the outstanding jazz program at North Texas State where he honed his skills as a composer, a pianist, and a bandleader.
We featured Caprice several times at KASU jazz shows and then later his new band Moore's Code. I was not surprised that their self titled album, "Moore's Code", sounded as good as it does. It's on bandcamp. I'll post a link on the Something Blue website, sbblues.com. Highly recommended.
We'll hear some more songs from this album, Saturday night on Something Blue. For today I picked a song featuring blues piano, organ, and guitar with a tremendous melody played on the saxophone.
Ok now, here's Moore's Code playing "Every Day".

From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-11-17
https://sbblues.com/2024/11/17/dj-hairy-larry-presents-njhb-playing-circular-logic/
Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear jazz from NJHB recorded at the very beginning.
I was planning on starting the New Jazz In Jonesboro concerts at TheArts@311 in 2013. It was Christmas break so I scheduled a session on December 29, 2012, with the founding members on NJHB.
I was rolling tape but I wasn’t really expecting to record an album. Turns out we played pretty good and we did. We recorded live in the studio, with just two mics recording the room, and we did it the NJHB way. We improvised the arrangements. We recorded four songs. I think I was the only musician there who had ever played them before. As I usually do with NJHB songs I made a radio mix for Arkansas Roots.
In our favor we had a room full of outstanding musicians.
Mike Lovell – guitar
Garrett Tyler – drums
Matt Jackson – bass
Hairy Larry – Fender Rhodes
Cody Ballard – tenor sax
and
Joseph Curtis – trumpet and flugelhorn

On September 29 we all showed up at the Craighead Forest Bandshell for Blues Fest and there was no electricity. Fortunately, I had my JBL Eon One Compact to use with Bebop Beatniks and it has batteries.
We ran the whole day one that amp. After Bebop Beatniks we heard The Spencer Brothers and Doug Butler. All the performances were great. I'm already playing some of the songs on Something Blue.

On October 6 we had bands. Blues bands. Rock bands. We moved to another location at Craighead Forest Park that had electricity. Thanks to Doug Butler for putting on the show and all the extra work he had to do. Thanks to Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians, Mike McLeod, John Shepherd and, the host band, Anna and the Tanks for playing. I recorded video and audio of all the acts and will be linking to the performances in this newsletter as I get them done.
Besides Bebop Beatniks, a jazz quartet, I am working with two other bands, Jazz Buskers, a vocals group, and United Gospel Trio, piano, organ, and bass, playing jazz from the hymnbook.
I went to The Biscuit in Helena. I played a lot of music. I visited with a lot of friends. I had a great time. Hat tip to Brent, Pat, Mayor Mike, John, Josh Parks, Diamond Jack, Elan, Bilbo King, John Shepherd, Jeremy Burnett, Gregg Cook, and The Emporium Orkestra with Rhode Island Red, Pinky Lee, and Mark.
Tell me about your music and your festivals. I will share on Delta Boogie and in the newsletter.

The Dragons Egg - 2024-11-05 10:07 PM
The Dragon's Egg
A System agnostic TTRPG by Larry Heyl
Licensed CC BY
The goal of the game is to steal the dragon's egg.
The game includes exploration, combat, and puzzles.
Exploration
---
The DM adjudicates actions and decides when the dragon is going to attack the party.
When not in combat the party travels together to try to find the dragon's lair so they can steal the dragon's egg. The DM chooses the rules for exploration using any published system or their own system. The players make a character sheet for the chosen system.
The players encounter NPCs who can be good or bad on their travels who they can talk to. They also encounter animals or monsters on their travels that are more difficult to talk to. Every encounter should contain clues to the location of the dragon's lair.
The players act in any order saying what they would like to do and the DM adjudicates their success. The DM might use dice rolls to determine the difficulty of the action or the DM might not need dice rolls for this.
The DM just says yes you can do that or they can tell the player what to roll to suceed in the action.
The DM never says you can't do that. Instead they say that will be really difficult. To do that you'll have to roll a critical success and if you don't roll a crit bad things might happen.
And the story begins.
You are all drinking in a tavern called The Dragon's Egg. You've been staying here for over a week partying every night, sleeping in every day. It's already dark when you realize you don't have enough money left to pay for a room for the night. You call the barkeep, Olaf Cranberry, over to the table and explain your situation. You've been good customers and he doesn't really want you sleeping in the common room so he says, "You've been good customers so I'll put your room on the tab for tonight. But on one condition. I'll wake you early in the morning and off you go to steal the dragon's egg. After you sell the egg you'll be rich so you have to promise to come back and settle up with Olaf." You're all drunk so you agree and after one more round you trundle off to bed.
At the crack of dawn there's Olaf, waking you up and putting you out. Oh no, you think, barely remembering what you had agreed to do last night. Once Olaf has you out of his tavern he says, "Go north. All the dragons are in the north."
All of the above are just suggestions. It's totally up to the DM to decide how they are going to run exploration and start the story.
Combat System
---
All players start with 5 d6 dice. The dragon starts with 5 plus the number of players d6 dice. Other antagonists will have fewer d6 dice to start with.
A Turn
The players attack in any order. They describe what they are going to do and they roll all of the dice in front of them. If they have n dice left they have to roll 3n to hit. If they hit the dragon puts one die in the middle of the table. If a player hits, the dragon shoots a firebolt at that player. If the dragon rolls n dice, a total of 3n or better hits. If the dragon hits, the player puts one die in the center of the table.
After the players roll the dragon uses her breath weapon. If the dice roll is not critical all players move one die to the center of the table.
Critical success is all sixes. Critical success gives double damage. Two die go into the middle of the table. If there is only one die left a six is a critical success.
Critical failure is all ones. One die goes into the middle of the table. If there is only one die left a one is a critical failure.
Combat ends when either the players have no dice left or the dragon has no dice left.
There is no death in combat. When a player has no dice left they are unconscious. If all the players are unconscious they wake up imprisoned in a dungeon. If the dragon has no dice left she flies away.
Combat with NPCs or monsters is the same except when their turn comes at the end of a round of cambat they attack with whatever weapons or spells they have.
If the players win the NPCs or monsters are unconscious and the players can safely leave without fear or worries about being followed. Their defeated enemies will not strike again because they don't want another whooping.
If the players lose they wake up where they are with no money, food, or weapons except knives, daggers, walking sticks, or other small weapons. Anything from a crossbow up is gone. Magic users still have their staff, books, and scrolls.
Imprisonment
---
If the players wake up in a dungeon they must escape the dungeon before they can continue the quest. Every dungeon is a puzzle.
(Sample dungeons should be included. Also a way for people to submit their dungeon puzzles. The dungeons can be as simple as a three room dungeon with a monster guarding the exit to classic logic puzzles or magical runes and lore.)
The End Of The Game
---
The final combat is in the dragon's lair. If the players win the dragon flies away, the players steal the dragon's egg, and they win. Now that they have the egg they can Rule The World but they don't really want to do that so they sell the egg and party until they run out of money.
If they play again they are on a quest to steal another dragon's egg.
If the dragon wins the players wake up in the dungeon under the mountain and it's the end of the game.
If they play again they must escape from the dungeon under the mountain, an even harder puzzle. The dungeon under the mountain is a cave with no entrances or exits so when the players solve the puzzle they are teleported to an unknown destination. From there they continue their quest to steal the dragon's egg.

From The Archives Of Something Blue - 2024-11-03
https://sbblues.com/2024/11/03/dj-hairy-larry-presents-josh-parks-playing-part-time-love/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an Arkansas Blues Man play a song about relationship problems.
I went to the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena Arkansas, in October, 2024, camping for the first time since before the pandemic. My friend Brent and I went down to the main stage on Wednesday night and we saw Josh Parks jamming the blues.
Josh had been jamming with The Emporium Orkestra at the Downtown Bar And Grill five years back and we had visited at the campground then too, so I really wanted to see him again.
Well, at the biscuit Josh is a busy man. I kept looking for him at the campground, I even got directions from some other campers, but I couldn't find him. Then on Friday night I was playing some music with my friend Pat and he asked if I wanted to go play with Josh. Well ... of course!
Pat and I had a great time jamming with Josh and with my new friend John who I met at Mayor Mike's campfire. I also got to meet Josh's friends and family. Some of them even older than I am.
So when I got back I was checking for recordings at KASU and on my hard drive. I found this show from a KASU Bluesday Tuesday, recorded on April 17, 2018.
I contacted Josh about the show and he filled in the personnell for the concert.
Josh Parks - guitar
Lance Womack, drums
Stewart Bear, keys
Jerry Bone, bass
All fine outstanding Arkansas musicians.
Now Josh plays in the style of Albert King and Michael Burks, also both from Arkansas. I have had the pleasure of hearing them both play many times and I just love the sound, all the way around.
The song I'm featuring is "Part Time Love", written by Clay Hammond. Little Johnny Taylor sang the number one hit in 1963. Taylor was born in Gregory, Arkansas.
So now, here's The Josh Parks Band playing "Part Time Love" recorded at KASU Bluesday Tuesday.

DJ Hairy Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing The Blue Crane - 2024-10-28 07:35 PM
DJ Hairy Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing The Blue Crane
From The Archives Of Something Blue - 2024-10-27
Thanks Marty. Today I'm going to play the title track of the soon to be released Bebop Beatniks album, "The Blue Crane".
Every fall I enter my festival season starting with Beatles At The Ridge, then Blues Fest, and then The King Biscuit Blues Festival. Sometimes things work out better than you could expect. Jeremy Jackson and Alex Washam both have busy lives, Conley Hunt started working on weekends, and I also had issues so we hadn't played together as a full band all year. And we also hadn't played with a horn player since last year's Blues Fest.
We were scheduled to play at Beatles At The Ridge, the next weekend at Blues Fest, and then the next weekend Alex was getting married. So congratulations to Alex and Rachel, but you can see how this would complicate our schedule.
Fortunately, Jeremy was able to play both dates and Alex was able to play at Beatles At The Ridge so, fingers crossed, I soldiered on.
And now ...
Introducing Dr. Paul Lessard.
Paul is the new theory and composition professor at ASU this year. I'm not in school but I took my degree in composition and I wanted to meet him.
We got together in his office and hit it off immediately, talking about music composition. It's surprising how few people I know who actually want to talk about composition and it's definitely one of my obsessions.
Well ... Paul plays jazz saxophone and he said to let him know if we were getting together to play because he'd like to sit in.
So I got to thinking and the next time I was getting the band together to play I invited Paul. As it turned out Alex and Jeremy were busy so, as the song goes, it was just the two of us.
We had a repertoire session playing some of my originals which, surprisingly enough, Paul had never played before.
He played great and I invited him to join us at Beatles Park to fill out our quartet. He said he could do it and the rest is history.
We played the Beatles Park gig on September 21 and then Alex's Blues Fest Sunday opened up and we played Blues Fest on September 29.
Sometimes the stars align and everything goes right. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Craighead Forest Bandshell, we had the lake behind us, a small but appreciative audience, and we had played every song on the set at least once before.
I got good audio and video recordings. I will post links at sbblues.com to the Youtube videos. In early November I will release the new Bebop Beatniks album, "The Blue Crane", featuring three songs I wrote.
And now, here's Bebop Beatniks playing "The Blue Crane".

Here's his reply
https://gamerplus.org/@djsundog@toot-lab.reclaim.technology/113373880138545307
This is my response.
I can't wait to hear it. It's on my Freegal wishlist now. I prefer to listen from my hard drive.
1 Jazz guys just hate it when anyone is successful. They call success a sellout. Sure Barry Manilow had some outstanding pop hits. Doesn't mean he can't play jazz.
2 And jazz guys just hate female vocalists. They want all the solo time. If you want to make a living playing jazz backing up a female vocalist pays. Every few years there is a jazz resurgence almost always led by a female vocalist. Or Herbie Hancock. (see 1)
3 Jazz guys refuse to acknowledge Barbra Streisand. (See 1 and 2)Home - Table Of Contents - Most Recent - RSS - Permalink

Listening Repertoire - 2024-10-14 11:20 AM
Listening Repertoire
I have developed this concept of listening repertoire, similar to practice repertoire or performance repertoire, but for listening.
Back in the olden days (also known as the sixties) when I got my paycheck I would head to the record store and buy an album. On a good week two but anything more than that would cut into my groceries and rent.
When I got home that record would hit the turntable and if I liked it as much as I thought I would it lived there for a while, at least several days before I would swap in the album I bought last week or one I had listened to for years.
But for that week and much of the next I'd listen to it a lot. When guests came over I would play it for them. If we had a party it would be playing in the background.
Now, jump to the present day, where I can listen to anything I want to, anytime. I rarely listen to an album more than once. I love live performances and I watch them on Youtube or listen to them on the Live Music Archive, usually once.
I think we can all relate to this experience. There's so much music and so little time it's hard to give any song or album the time it deserves. The in depth active listen, that only comes with repeated listening, sometimes in the background, sometimes sitting in your sweet spot, focusing only on the songs.
This is where listening repertoire comes in to save the day.
When I find a new (to me) album that I really like, I load it into my player and set it to loop. I pause it when I want and I start it again when I want, from the pause point or from track 1. But I let it live there, in my player, for a while, to get that deep understanding that only comes with repeated listening.
After a few days I'll swap it out for another album in my listening repertoire, for an old favorite, or for something new. But it remains at the top of my listening repertoire and I still put it on loop occasionally and just let it play.
When, after a week (or two) I find another album that I really like, it replaces the old with the new at the top of my listening repertoire.
Occasionally, I will scan through my listening repertoire and remove albums I'm no longer listening to frequently. Since they have been through my listening repertoire I know them well and I will certainly return to them in the future.
Some albums remain in my listening repertoire for a long time. I continue listening to them once or twice a month. They're just that good.
And yes, I keep a list of my listening repertoire. I add new albums at the top of the list. This formalization keeps me from forgetting an album too soon. Everybody's busy. Everybody forgets stuff. Removing an album from my listening repertoire is a decision I make, not something that accidentally happens.
You may have noticed that I am focusing on albums, not songs or playlists. I believe that the album is the musician's long form statement just like the song is their short form statement. An album has variety and depth so I can listen to it for several days. You do what works for you. I'm old. I like albums.
Here's my current listening repertoire. So it's newest (to the list) at the top. Not best at the top. The fact that Nubya's 5ive remains on the list after several years shows just how much I like it.

Going To The Biscuit - 2024-10-09 09:53 AM
Going to The Biscuit
2024 King Biscuit Blues Festival.
Before the pandemic I went every year. First to dance and then to play. Not that I didn't dance and play every year.
I last attended in 2019. I played with The Emporium Orkestra at Downtown Bar and Grill. Delta Legends played on the Cedell Davis Stage. And I played with all my friends at Tent City and Helena Handbasket.
I am so looking forward to this. It's gonna be great. I'm taking my guitar, harmonicas, and my piano. I hope I don't get too tired.
I can't wait to see my friends again and eat another biscuit.Home - Table Of Contents - Most Recent - RSS - Permalink

Dirt Simple Photo Gallery - 2024-10-02 08:26 PM
Episode 2 - Dirt Simple Photo Gallery
Dirt Simple Photo Gallery is the program that started me down the Plain Text Programs path. It predates my own thinking about Plain Text Programs by at least a decade. Ever since I wrote it I use it all the time. It is now my preferred web page generator for all kinds of web pages, not just galleries.
Like most of my programs I wrote it because I needed it. Vivian and I were putting on music events like Blues Fest, Sunday In The Park, Jazz Thursday, New Jazz In Jonesboro, and Bebopalooza. I recorded all the shows. Sometimes video, always audio. And we loved taking pictures of the musicians singing and playing.
After the shows we would dump the photo files to a hard drive, make all the original photos read only, and back them up to a CD or DVD. We really enjoyed scrolling through the photos, picking the ones we liked, cropping them and enhancing them, and resizing them for the internet.
And then that's where it fell apart. We recorded the show. We took the pictures. We cropped the pictures and had them ready to go for our Delta Boogie website. And we didn't want to write the html.
Some days we would have five or six bands playing. We usually had ten to twenty photos of each band that we picked out of hundreds of photos taken. Do the math. That's a lot of typing HTML code like a href =, img src, etc. A lot a captions to write. A lot of work to get done in a week. Because the next weekend we had another show. Another set of photos. Another bunch of html backlog.
And the thing I found out. If we didn't get the pages posted right away we almost never had time to post them later. I mean we had kids to raise, cooking to do, cars to fix, school to attend, not to mention work.
So, I loved writing programs more than I loved marking up html. And I could write one program and avoid marking up tons of html. And so I wrote the Dirt Simple Photo Gallery.
Even back in the dark ages of the internet also known as the nineties there were photo gallery programs. And just like today they were cumbersome and running them was a lot like data entry. You know what I hate worse than writing html? Data entry.
I had this idea. I would take all the photos we had ready for a gallery and I would upload them to a directory on our server. Then I would upload an index.php file and we'd have a photo gallery.
And that's just how Dirt Simple Photo Gallery works. And if that's really all you need you're done.
It wasn't quite all we needed. So I added a title.txt file and a notes.txt file so there could be a bit more than just the photos and captions on the web page. I was careful that I didn't have to write any html in the notes.txt file. The program even automatically turns copy and pasted links into hot links.
Now, you can include html in the notes.txt file. You can even embed iframes if you want to include an audio or video player. But you don't have to. Also, iframe embeds are just a copy and paste exactly like links. Easy peasy.
There's also the problem of the captions and the sort order of the photos.
Captions
---
I use the file names to carry the meta data required for captions and sort order.
These are the characters I use in the file names. Alphanumeric, commas, apostrophes, dashes, and underscores. I don't use spaces but the underscores are converted to spaces in the captions. I use Thunar and I love the bulk rename option where I can search and replace a set of file names and change all the spaces into underscores.
I have code that allows you to include special characters in your captions by using html character sets but it's confusing to think about. And I discovered the only special characters I really needed were dashes, commas, and apostrophes. All three of these characters are legal in file names on all major systems. Dashes are not problematic. Commas can cause problems if you are using comma delimited data but, I'm not, so no worries. Apostrophes can also be an issue because in php they are used as single quotes and can be used to delimit strings in the code. There is a way around this with php. Use double quotes to surround the entire string. If there is a place inside of that string where you would use single quotes, which is not uncommon in html, replace the single quotes with escaped double quotes, that is \". So that's what I did.
So now I can use all the apostrophes I want in my file names and they fly right through my code, never accidentally truncating a string and throwing errors.
Commas and apostrophes are important in captions. Captioning group shots without commas leads to misunderstanding people's names. And if your caption has a possessive in it like Joe's Garage leaving the apostrophe out is just wrong.
Using double quotes in a file name will truncate strings in the php code and throw errors. Usually, anywhere you would want a double quote a single quote will do.
There are other special characters, like dashes, that aren't problematic. Forward slashes and back slashes should not be used in file names ever. Some special characters may work on some systems and not on others. I've been using this program for almost 25 years and I really want commas and apostrophes and don't really care about other special characters in captions. You may have special needs for special characters I don't. That's why it's open source. If you need something the program isn't designed to provide test it. Fix it. Right now there are fewer than 100 lines of code in the program. I have confidence in you.
Sorting
---
Default sorting of images is alphabetical by file name. If you just name your files with good captions and don't add any numbers as a prefix that's what you'll get. Alphabetical by caption. This may be just what you need.
If, however, you want some other sort order you can prefix your files with nnn- where n is any integer.
000-filename.ext displays the picture at the top of the page. If the photo is narrow enough, the text from notes.txt will wrap around it to the left.
All the photos numbered 001- to 999- will display in a single column below the text. Unnumbered photos will also display below the text in alphabetical order. So if you want a photo at the top of the page add the prefix 000- to the file name. If alphabetical order is what you want for the rest of the photos you don't have to rename them.
Permitted extensions are jpg, png, or gif. (It's hapeg stupid!) It's easy to add other permitted extensions in the code but, of course, they have to be rendered by a browser. I did not include the jpeg extension choosing to rename jpeg files to jpg. This made it slightly easier to code.
There is a config.inc file where you can set your table width. The default is 700. I resize my photos to be 600 max width. I usually use jpg files with a quality level of 90. This reduces storage space and enables fast loading of images. The config.inc file also allows you to change background color, text color, link color, etc. There is also a CSS section in the config.inc file so you can change the font, the headline sizes, etc. Or add your own CSS.
If you have trouble getting the text wraparound to look good on your page there is a way to disable it in the config.inc file.
Install the page with ftp. Make a directory, where you want it on your website, and give it a good name. Upload index.php, title.txt, notes.txt, config.inc, and the image files into the directory. Go to your website and check it out. That's it.
Page maintenance is the same. Fix captions by renaming files. Add and delete images. Update the title or the text in notes.txt and upload the changes. Change the font, colors, or CSS in config.inc and upload the changes.
I have put up a demo site on infinityfree.com.
And I am posting my show notes on my blog at

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Delta Legends Playing All Over Again - 2024-09-04 11:18 AM
DJ Hairy Larry presents Delta Legends Playing All Over Again
Thanks Marty, I've got a great blues song this week performed live at the Fall Ball by Delta Legends.
https://sbblues.com/2024/09/04/dj-hairy-larry-presents-delta-legends-playing-all-over-again/
On September 30, 2017 Delta Legends took a road trip down to the Mississippi Hill Country to play at the Fall Ball. We originally booked to busk on Saturday morning but they offered us a slot early Saturday afternoon so we got to play that too. "All Over Again" is a blues standard made famous by B.B. King and Paul Butterfield. It's one of our best songs and inspired by the festival stage we nailed it.
And, about that busking Saturday morning. We recorded that too and those songs are included on our CD, "Two Woman Blues". It was a very productive day.
Now here's Delta Legends playing "All Over Again".

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jazz Writers Big Band Playing "Elegy"
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-08-25
https://sbblues.com/2024/08/25/dj-hairy-larry-presents-jazz-writers-big-band-playing-elegy/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a Big Band play a composition written by an Arkansas jazz educator.
I went to school at ASU with Joseph Curtis. After he graduated he was band director at Hoxie and Trumann. He's now in Law School in Little Rock.
I think the first time I recorded Joseph was when he was playing in an ASU small group called "Jazztette". Ron Horton wanted me to take some video of him teaching jazz improvisation and I also recorded their concert. I interviewed Dr. Horton and four of the students and produced a documentary, "Jazztette - Teaching Jazz Improvisation". They played an original jazz composition by Joseph Curtis called "Baile de Trece".
I also recorded his band, Bluebeck, at KASU Jazz Thursday and Bebopalooza. I got to sit in with Bluebeck on guitar at the Jazz Thursday show. Gary Gazaway was the headliner at the Bebopalooza show and he invited Joseph Curtis and Ron Horton up to play on their closing songs.
Joseph was in NJHB and he played at our first session on December 29, 2012 as well as on many NJHB shows and albums in 2013 including my senior recital.
Joseph has played with my band Bebop Beatniks frequently and he is featured on the album "Church". He would livestream with Bebop Beatniks from the Twitch Porch.
He participated in the KASU New Jazz In Jonesboro concerts at the public library. I got to play bass once with his band. He also played at New Jazz In Jonesboro with Ken Carroll and NJHB.
He contributed many of his songs to the Jazz Writers Big Band. I recorded most of their shows and the "Jazz Writers Big Band" album.
His brother Clinton Curtis plays amazing alto sax and I have also recorded him many times but that will have to be for another podcast.
Visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com for links.
Now here's the Jazz Writers Big Band playing the Joseph Curtis song, "Elegy".

From The Archives Of Something Blue 2021-12-01
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear Big Creek Band play some real country music at Blues Fest.
I always say we play all kinds of music at Blues Fest because when you get right down to it, it’s all blues.
The song we’re playing today features Dave Pearson singing a Merle Haggard song. And it don’t get more country than that.
Now for the interesting part of the story. I was rummaging around in the archives also known as a box of old CDs when I found a DVD labeled Big Creek Band. I looked at that and I thought, this is gold.
The video looks like it was shot on a VHS camcorder and it’s kind of rough with some skips and stops here and there.
There is also a Dennis Mathes original on the video and I’m hoping to find an audio version of that song without the skips and stops. I recorded every show at every Blues Fest so I should have it around here somewhere.
Ok, that was all very exciting but not quite as exciting as this moment, right now, when I get to share this music with you.
Recorded at Blues Fest, on September 16, 2001, Here’s Big Creek Band with Dave Pearson singing the Merle Haggard song “Sing Me Back Home”.

Posted on Sunday November 17, 2024Thanks Marty.
