DJ Hairy Larry Presents Lisa Ahia Singing My Romance - 2023-09-05 07:40 PM
DJ Hairy Larry Presents Lisa Ahia Singing My Romance
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-09-03
https://sbblues.com/2023/09/03/dj-hairy-larry-presents-lisa-ahia-singing-my-romance/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a female vocalist accompanied by a female pianist recorded in 2011 at Bebopalooza!
This Saturday I have a great show featuring top jazz pianists and female vocalists. So I got to thinking about what I have in the archives of Something Blue that will complement the show. And I came up with Lisa Ahia. I love the way she sings the song "My Romance" and I do have several recordings of it. But when I heard the version recorded right here at ASU, on October 15, 2011, I knew I had found what I was looking for. With Joy Sanford accompanying Lisa on piano the resulting recording is very sparse and perfectly rendered. A great song to go with a great show.
So if you love this sound the way I love this sound be sure to tune in Saturday night at 10:00. Or, if you're like me, and you're not always awake at 10:00, you can hear the show later on the Something Blue website, sbblues.com.
The Bebopalooza! jazz festival was sponsored by KASU and the ASU Music Department. The act was billed as Gary Gazaway and The Memphis Jazz All Stars festuring Lisa Ahia, vocals. Gary Gazaway does not play on this song. James Sexton on drums and David Eckert, bass, join Lisa and Joy. Also playing in the Memphis Jazz All Stars were Stephen Lee, piano. They invited the Director Of Jazz Studies, Ron Horton, and my good friend, Joseph Curtis, to play with them on the last two songs.
Stephen Lee and James Sexton are the Memphis part of the All Stars. They have both played at KASU events several times. All the other musicians lived in Northeast Arkansas at the time.
So now, recorded at Bebopalooza! on October 15, 2011, and featuring Lisa Ahia, vocals, and Joy Sanford, piano, here's "My Romance".

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Larry Donn And Wildfire Willie Playing Wild One - 2023-08-30 08:49 PM
DJ Hairy Larry Presents Larry Donn And Wildfire Willie Playing Wild One
From The Archives Of Something Blue August 27 2023
https://sbblues.com/2023/08/27/dj-hairy-larry-presents-larry-donn-and-wildfire-willie-playing-wild-one/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a rockabilly star from Sweden playing with The Great Larry Donn.
I had recorded Larry Donn before at Blues Fest so I knew how good he played. My friends Terry Carter and Philip Jackson were playing with him at the VFW and Terry told me that Wildfire Willie from Sweden was going to be at the show. I got permission from Larry Donn to record for Something Blue and the rest, as they say, is history.
It was a long time ago on August 18, 1993, at the VFW in Jonesboro, Arkansas. I was already recording and Wildfire Willie and I were talking in the green room while we listened to the show. Wildfire Willie said, "I can't believe that I'm in Jonesboro, Arkansas, listening to the great Larry Donn."
I love telling that story because that's what opened my eyes to how important the music from Northeast Arkansas is to the rest of the world. I mean, here's a rockabilly musician from Sweden who traveled all the way to Arkansas so he could rub shoulders and play music with some of the great musicians that he loved and that inspired him to start his rockabilly band, Wildfire Willie & The Ramblers.
And the next day, I got in on a little bit of that playing with the greats when we had a jam session at Terry Carters studio and I got to sit in with Larry Donn and Wildfire Willie. That was my first time playing with Larry Donn but not my last, as we got to know each other quite well, over the years.
Playing in The Killer Possum band that night were Larry Donn, piano and vocals; Terry Carter, Sax; Philip Jackson, bass; and Tommy Riley, drums; all fine, outstanding, Northeast Arkansas musicians.
Now, recorded for Something Blue on August 18, 1993, here's Larry Donn and the Killer Possum Band with guest star Wildfire Willie playing guitar and singing "Wild One".

DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB Playing Cold Fusion - 2023-08-21 05:23 PM
DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB Playing Cold Fusion
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-08-20
https://sbblues.com/2023/08/20/dj-hairy-larry-presents-njhb-playing-cold-fusion/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear one of my compositions recorded at HairyLarryLand.
NJHB is the house band for the New Jazz In Jonesboro concert series. We were starting up the concerts again in the fall of 2018 and I had written a number of songs titled after concepts of contemporary physics.
So on July 28, 2018, we got together to read and record three of these pieces, "Cold Fusion", "Quantum Blues", and "Entanglement". These songs make up the NJHB, "Quantum Blues" album.
We had Tyler Remagen on tenor sax; Spencer Rawlins, bass, and I'm on piano. We all live in the Jonesboro area and we were all students in the ASU jazz program at the time.
I was looking for album artwork and the circular images of particle accelerators attracted my attention. Kind of a physics mandala.
I found art quilts by Kate Findlay in her Hadron Collider Series and I loved the one called Atomic. I contacted Kate and got her permission to use her photograph of the quilt on the album. I will include a link to the quilt and the album cover art on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.
Ok now, here's NJHB playing my song, "Cold Fusion", recorded at HairyLarryLand on July 28, 2018.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Joe Lee Playing Winter Blues - 2023-08-14 03:16 PM
DJ Hairy Larry Presents Joe Lee Playing Winter Blues
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-08-13
https://sbblues.com/2023/08/14/dj-hairy-larry-presents-joe-lee-playing-winter-blues/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to play an original blues featuring Ronnie Coletta and Joe Lee.
"Joe Lee Swings On" was my second album project with Joe Lee. It's a jazz album with all the songs except one recorded in the studio. So I came into the project with the tracks already mastered to tape. I digitized the audio tape mixes to my computer and then I mastered the tracks for the album. Vivian and I also did the liner artwork and Vivian wrote the blurb.
She said, "Papa Joe really knows how to put it together." Swings On" is an example of a pro at work. Featuring four Joe Lee originals and tight renditions of Jazz classics it will be as listenable ten years from now as it is today."
This has proved to be the case.
We worked with Joe every step of the way. He approved the artwork and provided the cover photo. The photo on the back of the album was taken at Blues Fest with Joe wearing his blue dashiki. I'll include the artwork on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.
Joe liked the album so much that he gave me coproduction credits, a real feather in my cap. Joe produced records with Scotty Moore and I produced records with Joe.
One of Joe's original songs on the album, "Winter Blues", features Joe Lee on flute; Ben Brogdon, bass; Ronnie Coletta, guitar, and Mike Overall, drums. All of these musicians were regular session players at Alley Records with deep Arkansas roots.
Joe just loved Ronnie Coletta's guitar work comparing him to Wes Montgomery. In many ways Ronnie's smooth rhythm parts and stellar leads define the album. "Winter Blues" is a flute feature. Joe's flute work is second to none.
Ok now, recorded right here in Jonesboro at Alley Records here's Joe Lee playing "Winter Blues".

Video Internet Strategy And History - 2023-08-09 02:02 PM
Video Internet Strategy And History
https://gamerplus.org/@hairylarry/pages/1691604344797
I discuss my current strategy for sharing videos on the internet and my almost three decades of history programming the internet.
I use archive.org, Live Music Archive, for hosting video and audio because I think they will have my work available after my self hosting stops.
https://archive.org/details/HairyLarry?tab=collection
I use Youtube because that's where the audience is.
https://www.youtube.com/hairylarry
I use the SDF Peertube, Toobnix, instance because I'm a member and it's available.
https://toobnix.org/a/hairylarry/video-channels
I used to self host Peertube on Yunohost but that server went belly up which is one of the problems of self hosting.
I like Peertube but I would like to pair it with a microblog/blog social network. I post more text than videos.
I am running the Gamer+ Firefish server and I like Firefish very much. I did buy in early betting on the future. I have run dated social networks in the past like elgg and oxwall. When they lost support they became unmaintainable. I have also run Mastodon and Friendica but I didn't have a clear purpose other than Free Culture/Creative Commons.
I have also written social network software in php but I've never written anything federated.
I wrote TV Soup before there was myspace or youtube with user contributed videos, often realmedia or vivo.
https://deltaboogie.com/tvsoup/
I have been programming the internet for almost 30 years. My first major website, Delta Boogie, is still running at deltaboogie.com, and I feed it regularly. I started it in 1995, back in the days of Alta Vista, fireplace gifs, and weather widgets.
https://deltaboogie.com/
It's all been fun in spite of the occasional frustration and heartbreak.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Paul Nunis Playing Kokomo Blues - 2023-08-07 02:50 PM
DJ Hairy Larry Presents Paul Nunis Playing Kokomo Blues
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-08-07
https://sbblues.com/2023/08/06/dj-hairy-larry-presents-paul-nunis-playing-kokomo-blues/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear The Bluescaster playing acoustic blues at KASU Jazz Thursday.
Paul Nunis is The Bluescaster. I met him at Blues Fest. He played so well I immediately started playing his music on Something Blue. He was also active at The Arts@311 and a regular performer in the Jazz Thursday Jam Sessions.
Later Paul was a founding member of Bebop Beatniks, playing bass in my band for years until his solo career didn't leave him with enough time to play as a sideman. He wrote "At The Speed Of Love", the hit on the Bebop Beatniks album, "Leaves".
He wrote songs all the time and we often shared new material at Angie Owens' Songwriters Workshop.
Now, about that name Bluescaster. Electric blues is often played on a Telecaster or a Stratocaster so that's one way of looking at it.
Paul and I both read a lot of Science Fiction and Fantasy so that opens up another way to look at it.
He's like a spellcaster, a bard who casts spells with his blues. That works for me because he's a guitar wizard.
So now, recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday on June 28, 2012, here's Paul Nunis playing "Kokomo Blues".

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a bossa, featuring two of my friends, recorded at the Delta Jazz Workshop.
Besides being a jazz clinic the Delta Jazz Workshop is a mini festival with five jazz concerts from Monday through Friday. You can't learn jazz without listening to jazz and since there's no music like live music you can't play jazz without listening to live jazz. So the nightly concerts are actually an integral part of the learning experience.
The concerts were also a great opportunity for me to record Northeast Arkansas jazz musicians for Something Blue. I mean, I was going to the concerts anyway so I might as well roll tape, I mean fill flash cards, the modern day equivalent of tape.
On July 12, 2016, it was Jay Shepherd's turn to bring his band and play. I've known Jay for years and he's played guitar with Bebop Beatniks and with NJHB. He plays stand out performances on the new Bebop Beatniks album, "Church" and he is also featured playing with NJHB on "Bop Soup" recorded at my Senior Recital.
Also featured on "Blue Bossa" is my friend Tyler Worsham on piano. He helped me many times at my recitals. He played at Trilogy For The Arts and he is featured on the NJHB album, "Blue Goose", recorded at New Jazz In Jonesboro in the Jonesboro Public Library.
Also playing on "Blue Bossa" are Terrell Montgomery, bass and Keyven Dunn, drums. All of these musicians were students at ASU.
I remember one time in the bandroom, right after I wrote "Malaysia", and before it was ever recorded, Tyler Worsham and Terrell Montgomery ran through the piece for me in what is called a reading. They enjoyed playing "Malaysia" and that's a big boost to a composer's confidence.
OK now, recorded live on July 12, 2016 in the Fine Arts Recital Hall at the Delta Jazz Workshop here's Jay Shepherd and his band playing "Blue Bossa".

Saturday, July 29, we will have a special, 5th Saturday, Inspired Unreality open game chat. Last week was one of the best chats we've had except we missed Alan because he was logging the most volunteer hours at NEA Game Fest.
I hear you won an award Alan. Congrats.
Inspired Unreality is held in the gamerplus voice chat room in Tenkar's Tavern on Discord. For a link go to the Gamer+ Archive, here.
https://archive.gamerplus.org/index
Be forewarned, the Gamer+ Archive has over 400 posts and it takes about 20 seconds to load. The invite link is under the Saturday Morning Gamer+ Chat heading in the upper left.
The new, federated, Gamer+ is much better than the old Gamer+. But it's not a great fit for some of the Gamer+ activities. So I'm going to post another page that will cover these topics.

And more in the future. Carl and I are already working on one idea.
What would you like Gamer+ to do? Would you like to run a game? Do you want to host a podcast? Or a livestream? Let me know because ...
I am experienced ... are you?
Please forward this email to you gaming friends. And share this link.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Cruize Brothers Playing Born Under A Bad Sign - 2023-07-23 01:57 PM
DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Cruize Brothers Playing Born Under A Bad Sign
From The Archives Of Something Blue July 23, 2023
https://sbblues.com/2023/07/23/dj-hairy-larry-presents-the-cruize-brothers-playing-born-under-a-bad-sign/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an Albert King song played at KASU Blue Monday.
When I first met Mike Dollins we were both promoting the blues on myspace. That's right. We're old.
Pretty soon he was contributing to Delta Boogie, keeping me up to date with the Little Rock Blues scene. Next thing you know he was coming up to Jonesboro to play at the Craighead Forest Bandshell and bringing his friends. Who soon became my friends.
I booked Hairy Larry and George in Little Rock and Mike Dollins was in the audience, enjoying the show. It was one of our best shows, too, with Suzanne and Fred joining us during the second set. I'll include a link on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.
Mike Dollins plays blues and jazz guitar. Playing with Mike at Blue Monday were Guido Ciardetti, bass and Brad Messer, drums. Their band name was The Cruize Brothers.
Mike told me that Brad passed away around 2012. Guido owns Hot Springs Music. All three of them are from Arkansas.
This podcast has another tie to Arkansas Roots. The song "Born Under A Bad Sign" was first recorded and made famous by Albert King. Albert King was born in Mississippi but he grew up near Forrest City, Arkansas, where his family moved when he was eight years old. He started his music career with the Groove Boys in Osceola, Arkansas.
I always introduce "Born Under A Bad Sign" as an Albert King song, which is, of course, correct. But the lyrics to "Born Under a Bad Sign" were written by Stax Records singer William Bell with the music by Stax bandleader Booker T. Jones.
So now, here's The Cruize Brothers, recorded for Something Blue on June 15, 2009, playing "Born Under A Bad Sign".

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a Hank Mobley song recorded by ASU students at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.
The Common Time Quartet was Josh Carter, sax; Alex Ditto, guitar; Spencer Rawlins, bass; and Chris Isom, drums. They are all still playing music around here except Josh Carter who moved to Japan.
All four are excellent musicians and the Common Time Quartet performed every week at different Jonesboro venues. So I was very pleased to get to record their well rehearsed band at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.
I met them all at ASU, playing in the jazz small groups and they also helped me with my composition recitals. I even got to play with Chris Isom again this summer at the ASU band room when he subbed in for the Bebop Beatniks drummer at one of our sessions.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry Playing Low Earth Orbit - 2023-07-10 10:10 AM
DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry Playing Low Earth Orbit
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-07-09
https://sbblues.com/2023/07/10/dj-hairy-larry-presents-hairy-larry-playing-low-earth-orbit/
Thanks Marty, today I'm going to take my chill jazz piano into "Low Earth Orbit".
The pandemic was hard on everyone but it was particularly hard on musicians. Many musicians not only had to endure lockdown but they lost their income too.
It was hard on me because, for me, like many other musicians, playing music is not optional. Of course, I practiced every day but as any working musician will tell you, that's not the same. I like to practice but I have to play for an audience.
So when my daughter started livestreaming I thought, maybe that could work for me? I got a twitch account and set up a twitch studio with a powerful computer, lights, and webcams. It was just the kind of project that I like. Technical and creative.
I picked some songs I'd already written and I wrote some more. Pretty soon I had 16 songs in my streaming repertoire. I programmed iRealPro to play bass and drums on my songs while I added piano. It was great. I called my channel Hairy Larry Practicing Piano but, to me, it was still a live performance three times a week.
And then we started having lulls between the surges and I felt safe enough to play outside, so I would play at the Craighead Forest Bandshell, Beatles Park, or I'd just find some nice scenery and sit in front of it and play.
I call it Guerilla Livestreaming Chill Jazz Piano In Scenic Northeast Arkansas.
I licensed all of these recordings Creative Commons Attribution to make it easy for others to collaborate with me or use my music in their projects.
Check out the Something Blue website at sbblues.com for some links.
Now, recorded at Beatles Park in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, on March 27, 2022, here's "Low Earth Orbit".

Delta Boogie Newsletter - July 2023 - It's Hot!
I know, it's supposed to be hot on the 4th of July, but without getting political, this climate change has got me down.
We are even livestreaming from the ASU bandroom. Where it's air conditioned.
Bebop Beatniks Livestreams are now on my Youtube channel.
https://www.youtube.com/hairylarry
I am learning that it's easier to livestream outside but I'm sure we'll get it figured out soon.
The power outage that we had at our last session didn't help. What could we do? Plug everything into my battery powered PA and play in the dark. Now, that was fun!
Here's two more excerpts from Matt Chaney's soon to be released book, "River Shows, Blues, Ragtime, Jazz and Country Music".

The Local timeline is more like the old Gamer+ where you see all posts and boosts by Gamer+ gamers.
The Social timeline is a combination of the Home and Local timelines.
The Recommended timeline shows posts from other gaming servers on the fediverse.
The Global timeline has posts from all the servers Gamer+ connects to.
So, that's fun. You can sign up at

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Delta Legends Playing Im Your Professor - 2023-07-02 03:51 PM
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-07-02
https://sbblues.com/2023/07/02/dj-hairy-larry-presents-delta-legends-playing-im-your-professor/
Thanks Marty, today I'm going to sing a song I learned from a blues legend, Sam Myers.
I love the King Biscuit Blues Festival and I used to attend every year. One of my favorite acts was Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets with Sam Myers. When they played I was always front and center dancing to their great blues.
One of the songs Sam did was "I'm Your Professor". Because of ASU I just had to add the song to my repertoire. It's a jump blues with humorous lyrics.
Well, Sam died in 2006, but I kept on singing that song. And when Delta Legends played at The Biscuit there I was with John and Jeremy singing "I'm Your Professor". Of course, I dedicated it to the memory of Sam Myers.
Delta Legends are John Shepherd, guitar; Jeremy Burnett, harp; and Hairy Larry, bass and harp. We all sing. John and Jeremy are from Wynne and I've lived in Arkansas for over fifty years, but even before I moved to Arkansas I had Arkansas Roots because Chicago Blues was created by musicians who moved to Chicago from the Delta.
Ok now, here's Delta Legends on the Cedell Davis Stage at the King Biscuit Blues Festival on October 11, 2019, playing a song I learned from Sam Myers, "I'm Your Professor".

Creative Commons Attribution - 2023-06-30 10:36 PM
https://gamerplus.org/@hairylarry/pages/1688181135340
I've been using the Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY) for many years, long before Wizards Of The Coast made it famous in the gaming world by licensing the 5e SRD, CC BY.
I intended to write about the CC BY license before ORC was released. I want to discuss ORC and it's potential but I want to do CC BY first.
If I license my story CC BY (which I do) it means that you can build on this story, change it, write a sequel, make a movie, it's all good. As long as you include proper attribution. Like this.
The Wizard and the Djinn
by Larry Heyl - CC BY
This serves two purposes. It explains to your readers just where you get off adapting my work. Because you have permission to adapt my work.
But more importantly the chain of attribution allows people who like what they read to find more of it.
If a work is in the public domain, or CC 0, then you can adapt that work without including attribution.
I never do this, but you can. I include the chain of attribution even if it's traditional or author unknown. But you don't have to.
But if you adapt The Wizard and the Djinn you have to include attribution. Because it's licensed CC BY.
At the Creative Commons Chooser I see that a CC BY license
Allows adaptations of your work to be shared
and
Allows commercial uses of your work
https://creativecommons.org/choose/
So if you license your story CC BY someone else can alter your story and make a movie of it and profit from that movie as long as they include correct attribution.
CC BY is a very permissive license. As close to public domain as you can get.
But you still retain copyright, you demand attribution, and you can come to other licensing deals on your story if you and someone else want to.
Creative Commons licenses are great and they allow creators to build on each other's work. But if a large project, like a Hollywood film, wanted to use one of my songs they would never accept CC BY. They would have to have a signed contract and know who to pay.
You cannot remove the CC BY license from a work once licensed CC BY. It is irrevocable. But it doesn't stop you from making other arrangements on agreeable terms. You still own the copyright.Home - Table Of Contents - Most Recent - RSS - Permalink

Gamer+ News - Special Edition - June 28, 2023
https://gamerplus.org/@hairylarry/pages/1687930216009
After a few hiccups the new Gamer+ site is leveling out. I appreciate those who have already signed up. If you haven't, here's the link.
https://gamerplus.org/
The new Gamer+ is federated, which is a whole different ballgame for us. The Local timeline shows posts written or boosted by Gamer+ gamers, who have created an account at the link above. The Local timeline is most similar to the old Gamer+.
But then there's a Home timeline where you get all the posts and boosts by people you follow, whether they are Gamer+ gamers or not. The might be from dice.camp or tabletop.social or from any other federated social network.
How do you find people to follow? By reading the Local timeline. If I boost a post from someone I follow then that post will appear in the Local timeline. You can hover over or click on the poster's handle (@hairylarry@gamerplus.org), and click the plus sign to follow them.
Soon, you will be boosting posts to the Local timeline for me to read by people I might want to follow. Get it? It's a social network. Over all federated sites. Not just Gamer+.
So, that's very exciting. I'm finding lots of gamers and creators in the fediverse and the new Gamer+ gives me a gaming focus to learn about and enjoy what they are doing. If you are already on Mastodon, Peertube, or any other federated social network you can follow me, @hairylarry@gamerplus.org. Or join Gamer+ at the link above for a more immersive gaming experience.
So, please stay on topic. No politics or religion. There's plenty of sites that cover that. Gamer+ is about gaming and creating.
Tenkar has this same rule at Tenkar's Tavern where we host Inspired Unreality open game chat in the gamerplus chat rooms. Voice and text chat twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays at 11:00 AM. So, not this Saturday but Saturday week as they say in Arkansas.
I will send another Gamer+ news about that in July. The opening topic will be Fantasy and Science Fiction.
Sorry about the confusing email from Jazz Thursday. I did it wrong and entered the email first and customized the site names second, just bass ackwards. Maybe this email will be more appropriately branded.
Please forward this email to your gaming friends and share this link.

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an original jazz song with a spoken word part about popular culture in the internet age.
My advisor, Tim Crist, was always encouraging composition students to involve others in multimedia projects. So I put together Trilogy For The Arts, an outdoor happening featuring jazz music, spoken word, metal sculpture, poetry, dance, photography, and audio and video recording.
I also want to thank Don Bowyer and Ken Carroll for saying yes and helping me make this happen.
The Eleven O'clock Small Group played the jazz. Trevor Scudder welded the sculpture. Lizz Etzkorn was dancing with hula hoops. Karen Newberry, Rick Lott, Gregory Hansen, and Mike Luster read poetry.
So, mostly ASU students and faculty, living and working in Arkansas.
I'll include a link to the videos and to a Delta Boogie page with all the details, photos, and the program for the event.
The only thing bad that happened was the last couple of songs got rained out. Fortunately, I had recorded the rehearsal, so I can play this song I wrote on From The Archives Of Something Blue.
"Grumpy Cat AT SXSW" includes a spoken word part that I read at the rehearsal. It's a short commentary on how an internet meme can create a star out of a cat.
So now, rained out at Trilogy For The Arts on April 24, 2015, but fortunately recorded at rehearsal here's the Eleven O'clock Small Group playing my song, "Grumpy Cat At SXSW".

Grumpy Cat At SXSW
by Larry Heyl
Hi,
I'm Grumpy Cat,
the internet meme.
You've seen me hundreds of times.
People are always putting words in my mouth like
"I had fun once. It was awful."
and
"Your face. It's breathing my air... Stop it!"
On facebook I'm a Public Figure,
I have my own subreddit,
and my website is at grumpycats.com.
Really, I'm a nice kitty.
I like being petted
and sardines.
But they're lined up around the block
to see me at
South by Southwest.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Salty Dogs - 2023-06-20 08:21 AM
From The Archives Of Something Blue June 18, 2023
https://sbblues.com/2023/06/20/dj-hairy-larry-presents-the-salty-dogs/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an original country song I recorded at KASU Bluesday Tuesday.
I had been promoting The Salty Dogs on Delta Boogie and Something Blue for several years. Brad Williams sent me their CDs and I was knocked out. I mean how does a band sound progressive and old time country at the same time. Their country sound has a lot of rock and gospel included. I guess I would say they are a country band that rocks and sings gospel from the heart.
On March 12, 2013, they came to play at KASU Bluesday Tuesday, held at the Newport Country Club. This was the first time I heard them live and they did not disappoint. And, as you will hear, I was fortunate to get good recordings.
The Salty Dogs are Brad Williams, Bart Angel, Brent LaBeau, and Nick Devlin, all from Arkansas except Nick, who is from Scotland. I'll let Brad tell you a little bit more about his Arkansas Roots before he sings his song for you.
So now, recorded at KASU Bluesday Tuesday in Newport, Arkansas on March 12, 2013, here's The Salty Dogs singing "Water To Wine".

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Apple Rounds Cobb And Hees Playing Daniel - 2023-06-11 07:13 PM
From The Archives Of Something Blue June 11, 2023
https://sbblues.com/2023/06/12/dj-hairy-larry-presents-apple-rounds-cobb-and-hees-playing-daniel/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an acoustic quartet play an Elton John song at the Arkansas Roots Festival.
When I heard the Apple, Rounds, Cobb, and Hees band playing at the Arkansas Roots Festival they were so relaxed and their delivery was so smooth it was like hearing some musicians playing out on the back porch.
They sounded great, but it wasn't until I heard the recordings that I realized how good they really play.
Every part well played, every note in the right place, vocals that tell the story, harmonies always spot on, all blending together in a balanced sound.
It just don't get no better than this.
So now, here's Apple, Rounds, Cobb, and Hees singing the Elton John song, "Daniel", recorded at the Arkansas Roots Festival on April 8, 2017.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jazz Alliance Playing Partly Cloudy - 2023-06-05 06:28 AM
From the Archives Of Something Blue June 4, 2023
https://sbblues.com/2023/06/05/dj-hairy-larry-presents-jazz-alliance-playing-partly-cloudy/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an original jazz composition recorded right here in Jonesboro.
Before I returned to ASU, Jazz Alliance was playing at The Edge Coffeehouse. When I went to hear them play I immediately became a fan, going to every show and then recording all the shows for Something Blue.
They played jazz standards but they also played original compositions by their trumpeter, Dr. Ron Horton, who was the Director of Jazz Studies at ASU. Also in the band playing vibes and drums was Craig Collison, Director of Percussion Studies.
I recorded the album, "Partly Coudy", at their live shows selecting the best performances for each song. Which wasn't always easy because they were primarily a live performance act and they always played well.
Featured on today's song are Mike Overall, former editor of The Jonesboro Sun, who passed on in 2014. Ron Horton moved to the east coast where he played in Roger Humphreys band, RH Factor, until 2018. Craig Collison retired from his position as Director Of Percussion Studies at ASU and still lives in Jonesboro. Derek Doyle also remains in the Jonesboro area playing all styles of music.
You will hear featured soloists, Ron Horton on trumpet, then Craig Collison, vibes, and Derek Doyle, bass.
Ok now, here's the title track from the Jazz Alliance "Partly Cloudy" album recorded on September 18, 2009.

And that's Jazz Alliance playing the Ron Horton original, "Partly Cloudy", recorded at the Edge Coffeehouse in Jonesboro. Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, to hear more great jazz from Liam Noble, Yoni Mayraz, and the Southern University Jazz Ensemble.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB Playing Cookin For Piper - 2023-05-28 10:57 AM
DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB Playing Cookin For Piper
From the Archives of Something Blue May 28, 2023
https://sbblues.com/2023/05/28/dj-hairy-larry-presents-njhb-playing-cookin-for-piper/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a song I wrote, recorded at New Jazz In Jonesboro.
In 2013 we scheduled New Jazz In Jonesboro once a month at TheArts@311. We often played charts that had never seen a music stand before and although we were reading charts we leaned heavily into group improvisation and free jazz.
On July 6, 2013, we recorded the songs that would become the "Cookin' For Piper" album. Matt Jackson wrote "Cookin' For Piper". Joseph Curtis wrote "Working, P.M.". And I put "Monkey Walk" up, for the first time.
It's got a tricky rhythm with a bass vamp on the Rhodes starting and ending the song. Personnel on "Monkey Walk" were Hairy Larry - piano, harmonica, vocals, and percussion; Mike "Zif" Lovell - guitar; David Shade - guitar; Matt Jackson - bass; Joseph Curtis - trumpet; and Cody Ballard - tenor sax. James Carvell added percussion on tracks 3 through 6 including the title track that I will be playing on Something Blue this week.
The cover art for "Cookin' For Piper" was "Euterpe" drawn by Emily Dewbre-Young. I love the image, depicting a muse playing pipes, and Emily gave us permission to use her drawing on the album cover. Then she sold me the original artwork, very reasonably, and it's now hanging at Eclectic Geekery in Walnut Ridge. Visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com to see the album cover and hear the whole album.
Ok now, recorded at New Jazz In Jonesboro on July 6, 2013 here's NJHB playing my song, "Monkey Walk".

DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Common Time Quartet Playing All Of Me - 2023-05-21 08:09 PM
From The Archives Of Something Blue May 21 2023
https://sbblues.com/2023/05/21/dj-hairy-larry-presents-the-common-time-quartet-playing-all-of-me/
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a jazz standard played In The Loft at The Edge.
The Common Time Quartet played some cooking jazz and blues. I was happy to book them on a double bill at The Edge Coffeehouse featuring The Common Time Quartet and Bebop Beatniks.
Unfortunately their sax player, Josh Carter, couldn't make the gig. Fortunately they got Tyler Remagen to sub. So they delivered a little bit different sound with Tyler on tenor instead of Josh's scorching alto sax.
Playing the gig were Alex Ditto, guitar; Spencer Rawlins, bass; Chris Issom, drums; and Tyler Remagen, tenor sax, all ASU students in the jazz program at the time and all of them from Northeast Arkansas.
All of these musicians helped me with my composition recitals and at one time or another played with Bebop Beatniks. Tyler Remagen played tenor sax in Bebop Beatniks for years and is featured on both of the albums.
So now, recorded In The Loft at The Edge on May 6, 2017, here's The Common Time Quartet playing the jazz standard, "All Of Me".
