DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry playing "Chunga"
From The Archives Of Something Blue January 29, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an original post bop jazz piece recorded at Harriet O'Neal's piano studio.
Regular listeners know that I'm a composition major at ASU. There's more to being a composition major than putting notes on a page. You are also expected to arrange readings of your pieces, make recordings, and perform recitals.
I wrote a piece called "Chunga", a prequel to Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge". Harriet O'Neal was my piano teacher and she agreed to help play a reading and make a recording of the piece. Harriet was raised in Wynne, Arkansas, and she taught at ASU.
I pulled some top area musicians to fill out the rhythm section. On bass I had David Eckert, librarian at the Jonesboro Public Library who gave lessons at ASU and on drums, John Long, band director at Walnut Ridge.
For the saxophone parts I had two excellent musicians who I had played with in the jazz program at ASU, Aaron Decker - alto, and Cody Ballard - tenor. The bari player I had scheduled was out of town so I played the bari parts on my synthesizer.

Thanks Marty. This week on From The Archives Of Something Blue we’ve got a song recorded at KASU Blue Monday way back in 2009.
Grant Garland brought an amazing band to Blue Monday in Newport on September 14, 2009. Grant played guitar and sang, Rob Alley was on trumpet, Derek Doyle on bass, and Ben White, drums. Grant and Derek are from Arkansas. Rob Alley taught at ASU. They played a great show including standards and a few originals from Grant’s 2009 release that he called “Grant Garland”.
I new Derek and Rob well, I recorded them and even played with them occasionally. But this was my first chance to hear Grant play and he knocked me out. I am so glad that I got good recordings of this show, the musicianship was exquisite.
Now here’s Grant Garland singing a song he wrote called “Somethin’ ’bout The Way You Smiled” recorded at KASU Blue Monday on September 14, 2009.

On September 27, 2011, Jazz Alliance played at the Jonesboro Public Library. With Ron Horton on trumpet; Craig Collison, vibes; David Eckert, bass; and Mike Overall playing drums they really delivered on this jazz standard, “It Could Happen To You”. Mike was editor at the Jonesboro Sun. Ron taught at ASU and Craig and David continue teaching at ASU nearly ten years later. Listen now as they give us an exquisite performance of “It Could Happen To You”.

Not only do we improvise the solos, we improvise the arrangements too. We play all original charts and it's different charts every gig and different musicians too.
