It all started one year at Blues Fest. John Shepherd played the first part of his set without a band and Vivian loved it. Well, I did too, so I got in touch with John about recording a solo album and although it was a little bit outside of his comfort zone he was game.
Now I’m going to have to try to find that Blues Fest performance. It was probably in 2008 because …
I recorded John Shepherd at HairyLarryLand on February 21, 2009 and March 21, 2009. All tracks are John Shepherd, guitar and vocals, with no overdubs.
So it’s essentially a live album.
And he wrote all the songs.
We called the album “So Low” and it’s just killing all the way through. I picked the song “I Want To Be The One” to play today because of it’s deep lyric and exceptional blues guitar.
He showed up to play with just a guitar case. He said, “Don’t worry, there’s an amp in there too”. And sure enough when he opened his case there was a Pignose amp. I had John set up to sing in one room and I put the amp in another room with a close mic for sound isolation. So I was able to get John’s vocals right on top something that can be difficult to do when he’s singing with a loud band.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Billy Jones Bluez Singing I’m A Bluesman
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-06-23
Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear an Arkansas bluesman sing a song he wrote about his life in music.
It was October 8, 2013, when I met Mike Doyle in the parking lot at ASU to make our monthly sojourn down to Newport, Arkansas, for KASU Bluesday Tuesday. Mike was the KASU station manager at the time and he would MC the show. I was going to record Billy Jones Bluez for Something Blue.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Cottonmouth Playing July You’re A Woman
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-03-17
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear some southern rock from a band that was big in Arkansas in the seventies.
Sometimes I look around for just the right music to play on From The Archives Of Something Blue. And sometimes the music comes to me.
Andy Fulkerson got in touch with KASU with some songs recorded in 1982 and Marty Scarbrough knew immediately that I would be interested. So, thanks to Andy for working with me filling in the details and bringing the Cottonmouth story to life.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Kyle Tims Playing Texas Flood
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-02-04
Thanks Marty. All the songs featured on From The Archives Of Something Blue have Arkansas Roots. The song we’ll hear today has quadruple roots.
Kyle Tims played for us many times at Blues Fest. I love all his shows but the ones I connect to most were played by his blues rock power trio. Playing with Kyle were James Salger, bass, and Johnny Churchwell, drums, all from Northeast Arkansas.
I was talking to Sonny Burgess, Doug Greeno, and Larry Donn, and they told me that Kyle’s father, Tommy Tims, was a rockabilly drummer back in the day. So that’s a double connection.
The song “Texas Flood” was a big hit for Stevie Ray Vaughan, a Texas bluesman. But the song was written by an Arkansas bluesman, Larry Davis, and the guitar parts that everybody loves to hear Stevie play were first played by an Arkansas guitarist, Fenton Robinson. That’s the quadruple connection.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents John Shepherd Playing Blues Train
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-12-10
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an original blues song recorded right here in Jonesboro at HairyLarryLand.
There are two stories that go with this song. John Shepherd was a Blues Fest regular playing every year with his band. Then one year he started his set solo, with just guitar and vocals, before he brought his band onstage. Vivian commented on how much she liked the solo part of his set so I talked to John about doing an album that way, just guitar and vocals. We recorded the album on February 21, 2009 and March 21, 2009.
Now for the second story. When John showed up for the session he came in carrying a guitar case. When he opened the case he pulled out a Pignose amp.
That’s right, the amp fit right in the guitar case. The Pignose is a battery powered guitar amp that delivers 3 watts of pure blues power. As you will hear John could make it walk and talk.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Cruize Brothers Playing Born Under A Bad Sign
From The Archives Of Something Blue July 23, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an Albert King song played at KASU Blue Monday.
When I first met Mike Dollins we were both promoting the blues on myspace. That's right. We're old.
Pretty soon he was contributing to Delta Boogie, keeping me up to date with the Little Rock Blues scene. Next thing you know he was coming up to Jonesboro to play at the Craighead Forest Bandshell and bringing his friends. Who soon became my friends.
I booked Hairy Larry and George in Little Rock and Mike Dollins was in the audience, enjoying the show. It was one of our best shows, too, with Suzanne and Fred joining us during the second set. I'll include a link on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.
Mike Dollins plays blues and jazz guitar. Playing with Mike at Blue Monday were Guido Ciardetti, bass and Brad Messer, drums. Their band name was The Cruize Brothers.

Thanks Marty, I’ve got a great blues song this week performed live at the Fall Ball by Delta Legends.
On September 30, 2017 Delta Legends took a road trip down to the Mississippi Hill Country to play at the Fall Ball. We originally booked to busk on Saturday morning but they offered us a slot early Saturday afternoon so we got to play that too. “All Over Again” is a blues standard made famous by B.B. King and Paul Butterfield. It’s one of our best songs and inspired by the festival stage we nailed it.

Kyle Tims got in touch with me about playing at Blues Fest and we were glad to have him perform in September of 1997. I was talking to some of my friends who had played at Blues Fest, Sonny Burgess, Doug Greeno, and Larry Donn, and they told me that Kyle’s father, Tommy Tims, was a rockabilly drummer back in the day. Music runs in the family in Northeast Arkansas so I expected Kyle to put on a good show but everyone was just knocked out by his fantastic blues guitar work following in the footsteps of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

2. Something Blue – Friends – 29 second spot
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a band from Wynne singing a Muddy Waters song.
It was Blues Fest 2010 and John Shepherd and Happy Hour were closing the show. It was a special performance because Kyle Harrison had played earlier in the day and he joined John for the last half of the set. This gave us two amazing blues guitarists from Wynne, Arkansas, on the stage playing together.
And I want to emphasize playing together. Too often having more than one guitarist at a time turns into cutting heads, which is ok, but doesn’t sound as good as hearing great blues guitarists working together.

1. DJ Hairy Larry presents Houston Steele and Bad Habit
2. Something Blue – Anyday – 29 second spot
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a Keith Sykes song played at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.
When Houston Steele started playing with Braden Byrd and Billy Spence we started getting them to perform at the bandshell. He’s a fantastic guitarist and vocalist with a wry sense of humor that he uses to connect to his audience. He’s been playing around Jonesboro and all over the country for decades doing mostly country and rock hits. He can also deliver on the blues as we’re about to hear today.

02. Something Blue – Streak – 29 second spot
Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing one of my jazz pieces recorded live at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.
NJHB is a different kind of jazz band without established personnel or repertoire. As usual when we played at the Craighead Forest Bandshell on June 2, 2013, it was the first and only time we played with this group of musicians.
So for this show we had Matt Jackson – bass, Mike “Zif” Lovell – guitar, Suzanne Michell – vocals, drums, and percussion, Carl Holden – guitar, Jay Shepherd – guitar, “Shugga” Shane Chastain – Roland Fantom, Addison Boling – drums, and Hairy Larry – Fender Rhodes, vocals, percussion, and dancing.

And, about that busking Saturday morning. We recorded that too and those songs are included on our CD, “Two Woman Blues”. It was a very productive day.
Now here’s Delta Legends playing “All Over Again”.

Thanks Marty, I have so much fun doing From The Archives for Arkansas Roots.
Billy Jones is a bluesman. A genuine Arkansas bluesman. But he also plays country, funk, gospel, and soul. When I went to record him at KASU Bluesday Tuesday in Newport, Arkansas, on October 8, 2013, I never thought he would be playing the Temptations. Yet here’s the proof, Billy Jones Bluez playing the classic Motown hit, “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”.
