DJ Hairy Larry Presents Joseph Jarman Playing Petite Fleur

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Joseph Jarman Playing Petite Fleur
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2026-08-16

https://sbblues.com/2026/08/16/dj-hairy-larry-presents-joseph-jarman-playing-petite-fleur/

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a free jazz pioneer. born in Poplar Bluff, Arkansas, play a Sidney Bechet tune.

Joseph Jarman, born in Poplar Bluff, was a founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. He played sax and other instruments and you have probably seen photos of him on stage, in costume, with his face striped with white grease paint.

In 1991 he released an album, "Inheritance" under his own name and it includes some of his trademark free jazz saxophone work as well as two cover songs, showcasing his influences in the history of jazz.

"Petite Fleur" was written by Sidney Bechet and was an international hit. I've got two things to say about Sidney Bechet.

According to Wikipedia, "While working with Louis Armstrong, Bechet was one of the first musicians to develop the loose, fluid 'swinging' rhythmic style". We're talking about the very beginnings of jazz and there's Sidney Bechet and Louis Armstrong inventing swing, a style that took us through the swing era and remains heavily associated with jazz today.

During that same time period, in 1919, Bechet joined "Will Marion Cook's Syncopated Orchestra. The orchestra traveled to Europe, where they performed at the Royal Philharmonic Hall in London. ... While in London, he discovered the straight soprano saxophone and developed a style unlike his clarinet tone. Bechet was the first influential soprano saxophonist, leading to its rising popularity as a jazz instrument." Soprano sax was later adopted by jazz giants, John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter.

Then in 1952 Bechet wrote and recorded "Petite Fleur", a much covered song that became a huge hit when Chris Barber released it in 1959.

In 1991, Joseph Jarman included "Petite Fleur" on his album, "Inheritance" and with his rendition he shows great respect for the song, performing a melodic interpretation.

So now, please enjoy the other side of Joseph Jarman with his bow to a great jazz saxophonist, Sidney Bechet, as he plays "Petite Fleur".

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Mark Sallings Playing Playhouse

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Mark Sallings Playing Playhouse

https://sbblues.com/2026/08/09/dj-hairy-larry-presents-mark-sallings-playing-playhouse/

Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear an original song from a bluesman who lived in Wynne, Arkansas.

Mark Sallings and the Famous Unknowns were the house band at B.B. Kings in Memphis. Mark sang and played harmonica, sax, and keys. I got to know his wife, Sandi and Mark when he was playing at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas.

He played all over the area featuring other fine Arkansas musicians including Gerry Moss, Jerry Bone, Tony Spinner, and Jess Hoggard. He also played at Blues Fest. (Ok, now I’m going to have to dig out those tapes for a future podcast.)

He was also a great songwriter with blues hits including “Mighty Oaks”.

He usually fronted a four piece band but on his “Let It Be Known” album he closed with a production number, “Playhouse”, with another guitar, a Hammond B3, and a trumpet.

Featured on the album are

Mark Sallings – Vocals, harmonica, and saxophone
Victor Lukenbaugh – drums
Jerry Bone – bass
Tony Spinner – guitar
Ray Reach – Hammond B3
Jess Hoggard – guitar solo on Playhouse
and
Lester Harris – trumpet on Playhouse

This is going to be a treat!

So now, from his album “Let It Be Known”, here’s Mark Sallings singing “Playhouse”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Malaysia
Posted on 2026-07-12

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Malaysia
From The Archives Of Something Blue July 12, 2026

https://sbblues.com/2026/07/12/dj-hairy-larry-presents-bebop-beatniks-playing-malaysia-2/

Thanks Marty, Today we're going to hear Bebop Beatniks - Live At Blues Fest.

I wrote "Malaysia" in the fall of 2012 and it was first released on the NJHB album, "Bella's Blues", recorded on January 4, 2013. It's a Bossa Nova song with a beautiful melody and a hard bop turnaround that catches everyone's attention.

It quickly became an NJHB favorite and I also used it as a show closer for Bebop Beatniks and my solo piano shows.

In fact, when Bebop Beatniks recorded Live At Blues Fest on September 24, 2023, "Malaysia" was our closer.

We played as a quintet with two percussionists featuring

Tyler Remagen - sax and flute
Hairy Larry - piano and vocals
Jeremy Jackson - bass
Alex Washam - drums
and
Conley Hunt - percussion and vocals

I want to take a minute to talk about Tyler Remagen. Tyler helped me play on my recitals when he was an undergraduate in the ASU jazz program. I invited him to join Bebop Beatniks and he played on our studio album "Leaves".

He also played with NJHB and on my "Elphonium" album recorded on November 30, 2018, in the ASU Bandroom at my composition recital. We had a little side project going called Lady Day and The Prez featuring Whitley Newman singing Billie Holiday songs with Tyler playing the Lester Young tenor sax parts.

As always, I will leave links on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

And if you listen to these songs you will hear how well he played.

Then after he graduated from ASU he went to Cincinatti and took a Masters in Saxophone Performance. When he got back to Jonesboro his playing was at a whole different level as they say in the jazz world. That's what that kind of intensive study does for you.

And we were fortunate to have him playing with Bebop Beatniks again including on September 24, 2023, when we recorded Bebop Beatniks "Live At Blues Fest".

After playing together for all those years we had a tight band but Tyler Remagen was definitely the star of the show. We recorded a saxophone album.

And as I said before, "Malaysia" closed the show.

So now, here's Bebop Beatniks playing "Malaysia" featuring Tyler Remagen on tenor sax.
