Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear The Gentlemen Of Jazz play a jazz standard.
Phil Smith grew up in Blytheville, Arkansas, and started playing clarinet when he was eight years old. He studied jazz at Memphis State University and at Berklee School of Music.
I’m going to quote JazzMaui.org on this amazing part of Phil Smith’s career.
“In January of 1967, Phil and his fellow horn players from the University of Memphis traveled to Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Fame Recording Studio to record with Aretha Franklin and her first of many hits for Atlantic Records. The legendary producers, Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd were the hit makers and the album “I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You” with other classics “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man”, and “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” sold over 19 million copies. Phil Smith played baritone saxophone on the song “I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You.”

DJ Hairy Larry Presents PF Flyers Playing Child Of The Wild Blue Yonder
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-01-07
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a John Hiatt song preformed by an Arkansas rock band at the Johnny Cash Heritage Festival.
Look, I’ve been knowing Scott Snellgrove and Sonny Hunt forever. They both helped with the bandshell project, Scott used to work with Joe Lee at Alley, and I recorded an album at Sonny’s Soundworks studio. They’ve both been playing music in Northeast Arkansas for over 50 years.
I met Grady McGwire and Eddie Ross when PF Flyers was featured at Bluesday Tuesday in Newport. They’re such a great band that I was thrilled to get to record them again on October 17, 2019, at the Johnny Cash Heritage Festival
in Dyess, Arkansas.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Apple, Rounds, Cobb, and Hees Playing Daniel
From The Archives Of Something Blue June 11, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an acoustic quartet play an Elton John song at the Arkansas Roots Festival.
When I heard the Apple, Rounds, Cobb, and Hees band playing at the Arkansas Roots Festival they were so relaxed and their delivery was so smooth it was like hearing some musicians playing out on the back porch.
They sounded great, but it wasn't until I heard the recordings that I realized how good they really play.
Every part well played, every note in the right place, vocals that tell the story, harmonies always spot on, all blending together in a balanced sound.
It just don't get no better than this.
So now, here's Apple, Rounds, Cobb, and Hees singing the Elton John song, "Daniel", recorded at the Arkansas Roots Festival on April 8, 2017.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Joneseboro Jazz Society Big Band with Dizzy Gillespie
02. Something Blue – Season – 29 second spot
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a bebop legend playing with the Jonesboro Jazz Society Big Band.
Before Joe Lee passed I used to go to his house in the afternoon to digitize songs he had dug out of his archive. He always had a story about the musicians and the shows so I got my own personal From The Archives done Joe Lee style.
One week he told me about the time the Jonesboro Jazz Society brought Dizzy Gillespie to town to play. Before the show Joe was talking to Dizzy in the green room and Joe said, “We’re playing one of your songs tonight and we’d be glad to have you play a solo.” He told me that Dizzy demurred saying that he had his thing with his band and he wanted to do that show. Joe told me it was a long shot but worth the try.
The Jazz Society Big Band was hot that night and they were playing great. They started Dizzy’s composition strong and while Joe was playing his solo the crowd exploded. Joe thought wow and when he turned and saw Dizzy he laughed out loud. Dizzy played a great solo, of course, and then you can hear an inspired Mike Overall playing the drum setup into the shout chorus.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jazz Writers Big Band
02. Something Blue - Speakable - 29 second spot
Thanks Marty, whenever I'm working on a jazz show I always check through my Delta Jazz Workshop archives.
Every night during the Delta Jazz Workshop there is a different band performing for the students. I try to record all of these performances for the musicians and for the Archives of Something Blue.
On July 11, 2016, we were at Riceland Hall to hear Jazz Writers Big Band. I was fortunate to get good recordings of this performance. They never play the same show twice. Members of the band write or arrange all of the songs they play and they are always coming up with something new. Which makes them perfect for Something Blue.
