Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an original country song I recorded at KASU Bluesday Tuesday.
I had been promoting The Salty Dogs on Delta Boogie and Something Blue for several years. Brad Williams sent me their CDs and I was knocked out. I mean how does a band sound progressive and old time country at the same time. Their country sound has a lot of rock and gospel included. I guess I would say they are a country band that rocks and sings gospel from the heart.

BODY OF WORK is an intimate new album of songs from throughout my catalog, revisited and undressed.
It’s been twenty years since I wrote my first good song. Before that, I loved songs from afar, with all the ache and daydream teenage love requires. I was sixteen, sitting on the porch, up early having never gone to sleep. I felt like I had been let into the center of the universe.

Thanks Marty. Today, I'm singing a Willie Nelson song accompanied only by acoustic guitar.
Everyone says "Crazy" is a Patsy Cline song but Willie wrote it. I love both of them and I love the song. "Crazy" was a country music hit written to a 32 bar jazz change with a lot of blues in it. So when it comes to American roots music, Crazy's got it all.
On May 18, 2008, we were hosting Sunday In The Park at the Craighead Forest Bandshell. There was a little bit of time for a short set so I was the surprise guest. Just me and my guitar, I stood up to entertain the audience playing "Crazy", other jazz and blues standards, and a few originals.

01. DJ Hairy Larry presents Sonny Burgess and The Legenday Pacers playing “Today I Started Loving You Again”
02. Something Blue – Ranger – 29 second spot
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a country song performed by a rock and roll band at KASU Bluesday Tuesday.
We would get a lot of top acts at Bluesday Tuesday but the toppest of all was the international touring act, Sonny Burgess and The Legendary Pacers. They would play their Sun hits from the fifties as well as a lot of blues and rock and roll standards. And then, every so often, Sonny would sing a country song.

02. Something Blue – Creatures – 29 second spot
Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing a funny country song performed by a Blues Fest walk on.
Sometimes I know just what song I want to use for From The Archives Of Something Blue. And sometimes I’m digging through the archive and I find something really great that I had completely forgotten about.
It was September 13, 2009, and we had a last minute band cancellation due to health. I had been talking to a singer, Kerry Lee, earlier in the day and I thought he would be just the one to fill some silence with music while I organized The Mudcats. And he did more than that. He sang one funny song after another, “Dolly Parton’s Hits”, “Turnip Greens”, “I Lobster But Never Flounder”, and more.

The Salty Dogs at Bluesday Tuesday in Newport, Arkansas, on March 12, 2013
http://www.thesaltydogs.net/
Thanks Marty. This week on From the Archives of Something Blue we’re hearing some great country blues from KASU Bluesday Tuesday.
Like so many Arkansas musicians I met Brad Williams through Delta Boogie promoting The Salty Dogs on the web and playing their music on Something Blue. I recommended them to Mike Doyle who was booking Bluesday Tuesday at the time and I was glad when the stars aligned and I got to hear them live at the Newport Country Club on March 12, 2013.
The Salty Dogs are from Little Rock. Also playing in the band are Bart Angel, Brent LaBeau, Nick Devlin all living in Arkansas with deep Arkansas roots except Nick Devlin, the lead guitarist is from Edinburgh, Scotland. Where he got his Arkansas roots, I don’t know, but you can hear them in his music.
The Salty Dogs are different than most country bands. They play country, blues, and gospel music and their country originals sound like old school standards. And yet somehow they bring a new music feel to their shows.
Here they are now, The Salty Dogs, singing one they wrote “Starting Now”.
