I had heard just how hard A State Of Grace rocked it during worship at the Wesley. Brother Leonard Higgins, pastor at the Wesley, sang with the band but you have to attribute their sound to the students. Harmony vocals, great keyboards, soaring guitar, and pumping bass, driven hard by snare heavy drum parts. I thought they were perfect for Blues Fest.

Sometimes I know just what song I want to use for From The Archives Of Something Blue. And sometimes I’m digging through the archive and I find something really great that I had completely forgotten about.
It was September 13, 2009, and we had a last minute band cancellation due to health. I had been talking to a singer, Kerry Lee, earlier in the day and I thought he would be just the one to fill some silence with music while I organized The Mudcats. And he did more than that. Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a brand new entry to the archives of Something Blue.
I’ve got a new album out called Hairy Larry Livestreams, 16 original songs performed live on my twitch stream.
A little bit over a year ago I started livestreaming on twitch. I called my channel Hairy Larry Practicing Piano. The first song I wrote for my stream was “Crates”, track one on the new album.
I started off playing for two hours three times a week but since then I’ve got that a little bit more under control with shorter performances. Recently I’ve even skipped a few days because of the heat. My approximate schedule is Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 2:00 PM.
I have also been working with other musicians lately, once we even got Bebop Beatniks on the Twitch Porch. So instead of adding these performances to my schedule I let them replace a performance. Besides the setup time and the time spent playing the music there’s also a lot of time that goes into video and audio post production and then uploading and promoting the songs.

At Blues Fest we presented all kinds of music, blues, rock, acoustic, and country. We even had some harmony acts, gospel and pop. When John Shepherd brought his band it was real delta blues but occasionally they’d play some blues rock. The song we’re hearing today is both, starts as blues rock and ends with some great blues.

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing a jazz standard played at KASU Jazz Thursday.
Brandon Moore only spent one year in the ASU Jazz Program but it was a very eventful year. Brandon and his brother Tim rehearsed the band Caprice and I was able to record their recital in the band room. They played so good that I booked them for KASU Jazz Thursday on January 24, 2013. They played a great show and it wasn’t much later that they talked to me about recording the Caprice album, “from dawn til dusk”, which has become a favorite here at KASU.

Mike McLeod, from Imboden, Arkansas, was a regular performer at the Craighead Forest Bandshell. He was always popular with the audience singing in the style of Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffet. He would also get everyone to sing along on “Cover Of The Rolling Stone”.
Sandwiched in between his popular covers he would play original songs and public domain material. So I approached him about recording an album at HairyLarryLand and he was definitely up for it.

Thanks Marty, today we’ll hear Big Red sing a Big Mama Thorton song at KASU Bluesday Tuesday in Newport.
I met Kelly and Mike jamming at Blues Fest and at the King Biscuit Blues Festival. They put together a fantastic blues act called Big Red and The Soul Benders so I was happy to hear I would get to record them at Bluesday Tuesday in Newport, Arkansas. When I was setting up my microphones I got another surprise. They had brought Jawbone from Jawbone and Jolene to play harmonica. Jawbone and Jolene had also played at Blues Fest several times so it was great to hear him again. It’s a small blues world in Arkansas.

I was attending their shows at The Edge Coffeehouse and one night I was talking to Janie Overall and she told me about the Silver Scholar program in Arkansas where the state pays the tuition of students over 60. I had taken percussion in the eighties including Marimba lessons and I just loved working with the mallets. So I talked to Mr. Collison and signed up for lessons. I also signed up for jazz improv lessons with Dr. Horton, Director of Jazz Studies at ASU. And from there I went on to composition, theory, performance, conducting, all of the great things you learn in music school.

Suzanne and Fred have played for us regularly at Blues Fest, Bebopalooza, New Jazz In Jonesboro, they even came up from Little Rock to sing at my Senior Recital. Suzanne is a musician and an educator who gave private lessons from her studio in Little Rock. Besides teaching guitar and vocals Suzanne also plays and teaches piano.

New Jazz In Jonesboro moved to the Round Room where we played three seasons in 2018 and 2019. Our first show at the library was on September 1, 2018. NJHB plays all original songs and Joseph Curtis brought in a great new chart called “Neo Soul Jam #1”.
Playing on the song were Joseph Curtis – trumpet, Hunter Durham – trumpet, David Hall – woodwinds, Emily Lindsley – vibes, Tyler Worsham – piano, Alex Washam – drums, and Hairy Larry – bass. Every one of us took jazz at ASU and we’re all from Northeast Arkansas.

It was August 20, 2019, and it was hot and threatening rain. They had moved the Monster Grooves concert formerly known as Bluesday Tuesday indoors and we were glad. Because it was hot as August in Arkansas.
Mike Doyle and I had traveled south to see Gerry Moss, a storied bluesman. Moss was joined by Jerry Bone, bass and Danny Dozier, guitar presenting an all star lineup. All Arkansas musicians they did not disappoint. In fact they cooked all the way through their show.
