Thanks Marty. All the songs featured on From The Archives Of Something Blue have Arkansas Roots. The song we'll hear today has quadruple roots.
Kyle Tims played for us many times at Blues Fest. I love all his shows but the ones I connect to most were played by his blues rock power trio. Playing with Kyle were James Salger, bass, and Johnny Churchwell, drums, all from Northeast Arkansas.
I was talking to Sonny Burgess, Doug Greeno, and Larry Donn, and they told me that Kyle’s father, Tommy Tims, was a rockabilly drummer back in the day. So that's a double connection.
The song "Texas Flood" was a big hit for Stevie Ray Vaughan, a Texas bluesman. But the song was written by an Arkansas bluesman, Larry Davis, and the guitar parts that everybody loves to hear Stevie play were first played by an Arkansas guitarist, Fenton Robinson. That's the quadruple connection.
The original hit on "Texas Flood" was recorded in 1958. Stevie Ray recorded it in 1983, 15 years later. I made this recording at Blues Fest 98, another 15 years later. I'll include links to all three versions at the Something Blue website, sbblues.com.
So now, recorded for Something Blue at Blues Fest on September 5, 1998, here's Kyle Tims playing "Texas Flood".
And that's Kyle Tims playing "Texas Flood" at Blues Fest 98. Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, to hear All Mighty Senators and Gordon Stone.
Drucilla's Horrid Hobby
Drucilla Alexandra Fenworth-Covington was a disappointment, a source of great frustration to her parents and siblings alike, and a delicious monster. The family couldn't understand or relate to Drucilla, and lived in a constant state of trepidation regarding family gatherings and public functions. When dainty footwear and tailored outfits of linen were required, Drucilla might arrive in black shiny knee-high punk goth boots, torn fishnet stockings, and a dress perhaps best described as an industrial explosion of black lace, taffeta, and faux-patent leather. Where her twin sisters wore understated pearl necklaces, light lipstick and imperceptible blush, Drucilla was likely to wear a wide stainless-steel choker with a ring, black shiny lipstick, and a piecing in her nose. It was very unsettling at best, and nobody in her family knew what to do about her.
